Dippy81 Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 Hi all, In need of some help again, Long story short i've managed to lose my lock nut socket and now can't get my wheels off. I have a grinding noise in the new hub and disc i installed and kinda need to get them off to see what i did wrong. I asked two different tyre shops in town and all they said i could do was bash on a socket. (The nuts are recesed in my wheels, and it took me 2 months to track down the hub so i don't want to damage anything.) surely someone has had the same isssue. Quote
ke70dave Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 the bashing method is a little acricultural....but ive seen it work. youc can weld a nut to the lock nut, and use a ratchet on that. Quote
19914afc Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Most large tyre shops that sell wheels and other stuff should have lock nuts, we had a van at work that had them on and the owner didn't even know haha so we took it to jax quickfit think and they had one there to fit. Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Flat head screw driver. Make a notch on the rim of the nut and sit the flat head in it on an angle and tap with a hammer. Quote
rian Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Go to Supercheap or Repco and see if you can find the socket key thing for the locknut, a lot of them are the same key. Which kind of defeats the purpose... Quote
madKE35coupe Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 depending on what kind of lock nut it is mate, there are a few ways you can do it. to start off, if they are the kind where the lock nut key sits into the nut, and it looks abit like a 4 leaf clover.....ʞ©$ɟ them off, they are the most horrible lock nut you can get. either welding a socket or a steel bar and turn it with a stilsen wrench is about all you can do with those. if the lock nut key actually fits over the lock nut like a socket, some wheel shops will actually have a special socket set that has teeth inside them. you just have to tap it on the nut the as you turn it grips onto the nut, very handy tool :) if none of these work, just find a socket with the closest size to the nut, belt it on and use a ratchet or bar to get it off.....really a prick of a job mate feel bad for ya. if you were closer i would do it for ya :P Quote
Dippy81 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 There the kind that fits over the nut. I have just rang 5 of the bigger tyre shops and they got nothin. Will have to resort to the bashin idea just not real keen. Thks all. Quote

Jono.C Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 You can grind two opposite sides flat and get a big shifter onto it to get them off Quote
Dippy81 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 Did the socket trick. Got the wheel i needed off. Was easier than i thought no damage just gotta do it 3 more times. I still can't believe noone in this town has one of those Irwin sockets. Thks all. Quote
