KE30_RoLLa Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 hey RC members today i have been looking at a 5k conversion for my Ke38 4speed manual wagon.. I have been looking at about 4 topics about this, I'm sorry that i have to make another one. But i am just making to clarify some things here and there... Now in the near future i would like to either upgrade the 4k or dump the 5k motor in. So here are the questions about the 5k. 1. will my 4k 4speed manual gearbox fit in with the 5k ?? - ive been seeing yes on topics - 2. does the 70 gearbox mount to the 38 gearbox crossmember ?? apparently needs slightly modding ?? 3. does the 38 tailshaft go into the 70 box and is it the right length ?? - ive been seeing yes on topics - 4. when in the near future i plan to put the 5k in the 38 wagon and i choose to use the 5speed ke70 gearbox what will i have to change ?? :S thanks RC for being such an assistance with me and my questions haha thanks ke70dave aswell for helping me to find answers  haha Cheers for all the advice and ideas RC ! :y: - Kyle Quote
Figjam14 Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 yeah mate the 5k should bolt straight on although the 5k run an single outlet on the exhuast mani and the 4k has a double Quote
coln72 Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 yeah mate the 5k should bolt straight on although the 5k run an single outlet on the exhuast mani and the 4k has a double But you bolt the 4k manifold onto the 5k :) Quote
rollalicious Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 the thing I keep :bash: is that a 5k is no more legal than cut springs. Yes it looks the same, but if you were ever at fault in an accident its you paying. Vic P plate laws mean you can't engineer it which would be a piece of piss. Where do I go from here?? I've tried a roadworthy inspector and vicroads playing dumb to the capacity increase and they both said the same thing in the end. 4k or jump Where to from here? Quote
coln72 Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Gee, things have changed since I fitted a 5k into my first rolla. Vicroads/insurance/etc had no issues with it...... Even had it insured with the twin carbs. Quote
altezzaclub Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Yeah, but you were lucky to survive those days... we were all kiled in our millions by the unsafe things we did, and its only the Govt regulations that are saving us now! I'm amazed they don't just ban any car without the latest airbags/crush zones/electronic traction control... we make everyone else on the road unsafe! It much better we buy some brand-new 450bhp V8 Holden... Quote
philbey Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 1. Yes your gearbox will fit to the motor 2. I am not 100% but I thing a manual to manual conversion will be fine, it's only the Auto to Manual conversion that you need to change it? 3. Tailshafts are all the same length, there are different output shaft splines, you may need to get a matching front yoke and have it changed 4. A Ke70 5 speed will have the gear shifter in the wrong spot, you are better off getting a KE55 5 speed, otherwise you will have to cut the trans tunnel. Quote
KE30_RoLLa Posted February 29, 2012 Author Report Posted February 29, 2012 ohkays cool so really i should just chase a ke55 5speed gearbox, and i may have to change the front yoke to match ? thanks philbey ! Quote

And I thought it was my natural good looks and charm that kept me alive till now ;) I went the ke70 5 speed route in my KE35 and I actually preffered the relocated shifter location. Didnt have to reach as far for the gear stick. Had to loose the counsel (spelling), but I could deal with that. Quote
towe001 Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 1. will my 4k 4speed manual gearbox fit in with the 5k ?? - ive been seeing yes on topics - 1. Yes your gearbox will fit to the motor The only thing you might have to change is the flywheel - 5K flywheel is the same diameter, but the clutch surface is a bigger diameter (different clutch) and its heavier by about 1-2 kilos I used the 4k flywheel and a 4k clutch kit. 2. does the 70 gearbox mount to the 38 gearbox crossmember ?? apparently needs slightly modding ?? 2. I am not 100% but I thing a manual to manual conversion will be fine, it's only the Auto to Manual conversion that you need to change it? If your doing the ke70 g'box, i'll need the ke70 gearbox mount (cause its different to the other ke's) and you'll need to drill two holes and possibly widen the middle hole in the ke38 cross-member to fit the mount. If the car in question was an auto - The two speed auto (A20) - you will not have to change or modify the gearbox mount. Mounting holes (bolts) are in the correct position. The three speed auto (trimatic) - you will need to modify the g'box mount. An easy route to go would be to use the autos x-member and sit it next to the one for the manual and weld them together. The output flange on the auto is different so you'll have to chase up either another propshaft or swap the flange. 3. does the 38 tailshaft go into the 70 box and is it the right length ?? - ive been seeing yes on topics - 3. Tailshafts are all the same length, there are different output shaft splines, you may need to get a matching front yoke and have it changed As i said above - the tailshaft will fit, unless its from the trimatic. The only problems you'll come across is the diff - there's two different types. Banjo (aka Jap) - the input flange is small, and it has a removable cover on the back. Borg Warner (aka BW) - the input flange is big, and the only way to get to the pumpkin is from the front of the diff. And this is the about the only time (apart from the trimatic) you'll have troubles. 4. when in the near future i plan to put the 5k in the 38 wagon and i choose to use the 5speed ke70 gearbox what will i have to change ?? :S 4. A Ke70 5 speed will have the gear shifter in the wrong spot, you are better off getting a KE55 5 speed, otherwise you will have to cut the trans tunnel. Or, like me, the ke70's shifter is in the correct spot, but yeah with the car being manual you'll have to cut a section out of the trans-tunnel for the shifter to fit. And then either go without a center console or hunt up one from the auto. The cable for the speedo will fit the ke70 g'box. Quote
