Hi all,

I've just finished putting a used 3k (from a ke30) into my daughters ke20 and it seems to have a developed an intermittent bottom end knock on start up. It doesn't happen every time. Only when it has been sitting for a while and even then it's not every time. Once it starts it knocks for about 5 secs andvthen it's gone. There is no obvious noise while driving.

The old motor had a similar knock before putting a Conrod through the block.

Any tips on what might be the cause and how it can be fix before it becomes terminal?

Any thoughts appreciated.

My old 3k used to do that after sitting for awhile. I believe it may have something to do with the oil draining down while sitting. So it knocks for a few seconds until the pressures builds up and oil is circulating again.

are you sure it's bottom end knock if it's only doing it for 5 seconds after start up?

Mmm I'm not entirely sure it is. It may be top end. It just sounds like you can hear the number 4 piston thumping

Did it result any damage?

I just checked it again and it is from the top. I'm guessing it is the oil draining off. I'll get a genuine filter and see if that helps. Thanks all for the advice.

When we bought the KE70 it did this, and once we replaced the oil filter with one that had the anti-drainback valve it was better.

When I had the engine out for the head job I replaced the bearings, all of which were marked from lack of oil at startup.
