Felix Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 (edited) i have been daily driving k series corollas for 15 years now. i have had a chance to try a fair bit in that time. of all the brands toyota is best (although you pay for it), ryco is a close second. in general, for the price of one toyota filter you can buy two rycos. valvoline sucks, they seem to suffer bad from oil drainback. don't use them. next you have to consider size, the normal k series filter is a Z68 (ryco number), a mid sized filter. Redwarf runs the bigger Z9's which i have tried. i found on an older engine it can take longer to build oil pressure compared to smaller types. also you can get the later small filter Z386 (4af/g type), these are my favourite. they are the best for instant oil pickup. they spin straight on to a k series engine. love ke70 Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 whats the effect of using a bigger/smaller oil filter? ive heard it changes the oil pressure but wasnt sure if this was correct. Quote
Fayt Posted January 2, 2006 Author Report Posted January 2, 2006 ok, so what type number of ryco oil filters would be best for a mildly worked 5k do you think? Quote
Felix Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 whats the effect of using a bigger/smaller oil filter? ive heard it changes the oil pressure but wasnt sure if this was correct. not sure (don't have an oil pressure guage). all i know is the oil pressure light goes out much faster with a smaller filter. i like the small 4a type filters for my solid liftered 5k. ryco z386. builds pressure quicker than with larger filters. the small filters can't be too bad otherwise toyota wouldn't have used them for the 4ag series. Teddy Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 I know alot of the rally guys use the slightly larger filters, because the motor can take a lil bit more oil = more cooling.. etc Quote
love ke70 Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 hmm if its that much of an issue just go oil cooler... Quote
Teddy Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 No, not an issue, a small advantage. Along with an oiler cooler. Quote
muller Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 whats the effect of using a bigger/smaller oil filter? ive heard it changes the oil pressure but wasnt sure if this was correct. i didnt think that an oil filter that simply held a varger volume of oil at any time would change the pressure but slow the pressure building up and dropping away as fast. would this be right? also, what are these "Z386 (4af/g type)" oil filters worth? and are they worth the extra compared to the standard RYCO? Felix Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 (edited) think i paid just over $10 for my last ryco Z386. much the same price as a Z68. Edited January 2, 2006 by Felix Quote
muller Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 so seing as they both cost around the same amount then it would be better to go for the Z68 as this is a genuine toyota filter? Quote
Felix Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 no the z68 is the ryco equivalent of the original sized filter. you would be looking at around $20 for the genuine toyota item. Quote
muller Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 right-o then, I'm up to date on them. 20 bucks isnt much for a genuine part which dosent really get changed all that often. Quote
Mr Hardware Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 ryco z68 or valvoline VO11 (i think) does well for me. Quote
trd Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 (edited) we use RYCO Z37, goes straight onto the k motor & holds about 1lt, but i would buy a toyota one if it was make in japan & if they make a z37 http://www.ryco.co.nz all the info u could never need Edited January 4, 2006 by trd Quote
