I've added a second hatch to the family an AE82 which runs a 5spd manual. My Girlfriend is going to learn how to drive in this car so I am expecting a F*@ked clutch sooner or later. The problem I have is will the Gearbox come out by itself or does the engine and box need to come out to do a clutch. Thanks in advance

Gearbox comes out by itself. Not hard, but a bit of a pig to get back in as the weight of the differential is canted off to one side when lifting it back in.

I taught my eventual brother in law to drive, in my eventual wife's KE20. That needed a clutch change at the end of it, but was way easier!

He pays someone to drive him around now......

IMO, for a clutch change its easier to rip the just the motor out, change what you need to change and then pot the motor back in. Saves you ripping the x-member, box and driveshafts out and putting them back in again ;)

Nup. X member is 5 mins, and the driveshafts would have to be disconnected either way. Why create lots of extra unnecessary work.

CV's do not need to be removed, if you have the 6 bolt flange you undo them and move the shaft out of the way, if you have a stub axle then you undo the lower ball joint, pop the cv out of the gearbox and pull it all out of the way.

Drive shafts don't need to be disconnected to change the clutch or to remove only the motor.

If you undo just the motors mount, disconnect the motor from the box, lift the motor out enough to change the clutch? its too easy and wouldnt take long at all. In my case it would be better to do it this way with the tools i have. Each to their own i guess.
