Alvarado.e09 Posted February 3, 2012 Author Report Posted February 3, 2012 So I just got my tax money in today BAM! I want to start ordering parts for this block but not really sure on what engine i need to be ordering for. If I order parts for a 4AGE will it still work on this engine. How can i tell what kind of engine it is with the engine number? The guy told me it was from a MR2 so my question is the MR2 engine and the GTS corolla engine the same Quote
Sam_Q Posted February 3, 2012 Report Posted February 3, 2012 That's a first gen bigport head. If your really motivated change the valve stem seals and port the head while your at it. Otherwise they arn't known to have any issues. Quote
Alvarado.e09 Posted February 4, 2012 Author Report Posted February 4, 2012 I wanted to know what can i use to clean the exhaust valves on the head they look pretty dirty. Also the block its full of dirt and old oil. I was thinking carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner. Not sure i just don't want to put anything on it and mess things up. Quote

Alvarado.e09 Posted February 10, 2012 Author Report Posted February 10, 2012 Alright I talked to the mechanic and he told me i just need Head Bolts. I was looking at these on ebay  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cylinder-Head-Bolt-Set-4AF-4AFE-4AGE-4AGEC-4AGELC-4AGZE-/160442543388?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item255b1eed1c Quote

So my question is what bolts should i replace and what can i reuse to save some cash. Â your mechanic is full of shit, on some engines this is the case (torque to yeild bolts) but not on Toyota's. They determine the reusability of a bolt by checking the stretch. When they have too much stretch they get too thin and have to be replaced. This is right in the service manual if he doesn't want to listen to some random on the internet. I would trust Toyota bolts that have been used a few times over those non new non-genuine bolts that are probably chinese. Â Also if you buy a gasket set they should come with valve stems. Alvarado.e09 Posted February 10, 2012 Author Report Posted February 10, 2012 Alright thanks for the info Sam Ill just reuse my head bolts if you say its okay. The rebuild kit I'm getting has a gasket kit Ill send them a message and see if it comes with valve stem seals. Sam_Q Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 do you have a proper workshop manual? if so you yourself can check the diamter and see if they reusable. Quote
Jono.C Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 I'm the kind of guy who replaces most things while the engine is out of the car. The price of a set of new headbolts to be sure isn't much if it guarantees longevity of the motor and means i won't have to touch it again for a while. Mind you I'm doing a 5k which is probably a bit older than your 4age but my headbolts are shagged 1 Quote
Alvarado.e09 Posted February 14, 2012 Author Report Posted February 14, 2012 Okay so after all of this engine talk i found a running engine for 795 shipped. I'm not sure if i should rebuild or buy that engine. I was told it has 100k on it but it is running with warranty. I'm a little suck and not sure on what i should do. Any suggestions. Quote
Sam_Q Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 It will cost you significantly more to rebuild an engine, I say buy it Quote
