RollaLad Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 (edited) Hi guys, I'm a new member here so please be gentle :P lol I have done a fair bit of reading over the last few weeks, and i have bought a ke25. I'm looking to do a 3sge beams conversion, but I'm not into EFI, Through reading forums and google I have found people convert there 3sge beams to Carbys, but I'm not able to find any actual mechanical info, just photos and pretty much them writing 'this is my beams on cabys'. So i was wondering if you boys had any knowledge on this topic????? Beams on carbys would sound sweet  and help would be appreciated, cheers Edited January 17, 2012 by RollaLad Quote
Jordain Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Hey mate, I've googled around heaps and haven't seen anybody mention putting carby's on a 3SGE BEAMs... I've seen it on a 3SGE ... but not the beams with VVTi on both cams. I'd like to do it aswell but would be virtually impossible to tune with VVTi so... yeah Quote
RollaLad Posted January 17, 2012 Author Report Posted January 17, 2012 sh!t it was a 3sge out of a Mr2 so your right. it said beams in the topic summery but they where talking about other cars. if I'm going to go a 3sge I'm going to get a beams, that that means EFI :n: how did you go with your conversion?? and how much did you pay for your Beams if you don't mind me asking??.... oh what a nissan feeling! Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Yep, efi is pretty devestating. Quote
RollaLad Posted January 17, 2012 Author Report Posted January 17, 2012 sarcasm lol?? ITB's will be sweet but i like the carby's better.... Quote
styler Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 (edited) Yeah twin carbs would be sweet but wouldn't vvt would be way more difficult on carbs with a/f ratios etc? Edited January 17, 2012 by styler Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 A few guys in Altezzaclub have converted to ITBs, it makes a stunning difference. I haven't heard of anyone going to carbs, although a couple of guys have bought new cams and taken of the VVTi. I'd get one in there and get it all running sweetly in stock form before I tried modding anything. There is a lot of work in just doing that. Put aside $2500-$3000 and get a halfcut. That way you get every piece of wiring you need. When you need manuals and wiring diagrams give me a call. Quote
Jordain Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 I paid $2500 for a complete motor gearbox, loom, engine bay loom, tailshaft.... I've got Blacktop quad throttle bodies that I've made to 49mm with custom butterflys, Custom manifold to get it into my KE10... I am halfway through my BEAMS > KE10. It uses a KE20 cross member, BA falcon engine mount and stock altezza cast engine mount... really neat. You will have to cut your firewall and I recomend a ke70 rack and pinion. Fits better than a steering box as all the steeringbox linkages hit the motor. I got the j160 box into the ke10, Had to remove the tunnel and notch the central floor brace and get a LEEN j160 shifter kit ( Brings shifter 170mm forward ) I'm going to run a Pipercross filter, custom trumpets, 49mm blacktop quads, Custom manifold, baby TODA cams to keep the VVTi, adaptronic ECU and equal length extractors, although may run the stock extractors as they look decent... just heat wrap them. It's going to cost around 12 grand for a full build from scratch... but that's doing nearly everything myself. Quote
phil86 Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 A few people have done 4ag Carbie conversion, the generally run 4 Yamaha r1 motorbike carbies or twin carbies ie SU or the like. Something I've been thinking about, not too seriously though. On the plus I believe not much upgrade in terms of fuel is needed and wiring is easier as u don't run the ecu. Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 jordain that is going to be a monster! It's going to cost around 12 grand for a full build from scratch.. ..and that is painful but quite accurate I'd expect. Not many people think a full conversion to 4AGE or 3SGE will cost more than $3000-4000. Quote
kickn5k Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Hi guys, I'm a new member here so please be gentle :P lol I have done a fair bit of reading over the last few weeks, and i have bought a ke25. Welcome to RC for starters!! It will sound pretty cool with carbs!! My only question is why not EFI it's not that hard and in the long run wwwaaaaaayyyy cheaper than messing with old school carbs. ITB's sound just as nice too, you'll also gain drivability, throttle response, fuel economy and alot nicer cold startup. Not hating on carbs. My su's did me well for over 2 years without a re-tune. If you still want to carb a beams? I'd imagine you'd need some form of electricary to work the ignition and VVTI. In all your beams guruness Jordain and alltezaclub would a VTEC controller work to controll the VVTI? Could be an option. Stu. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 sh!t it was a 3sge out of a Mr2 so your right. it said beams in the topic summery but they where talking about other cars. There are 2 different 3SGE BEAMS motors though (well, technically 3 but one is so rare it's not funny), the red-top which came out in the last of the ST202 Celicas and SW20 MR2s in east-west config and single VVTi, and the black-top which came out in north-south config and dual VVTi in the RS200 Altezza. So it could have been a BEAMs motor in the MR2... Quote
altezzaclub Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Hunt through altezzaclub.org.nz & see. The PowerFC was one that guys were using. I have a Power FC in my Altezza. It was the only real way to control the fuel and ignition for the extra 'go' that you get with a turbo The Power FC is adjustable in the ignition map from -50 to +50 degrees in timing, (i think) its a large range anyway. Air flow map, injector duration, intake cam and exhaust cam are all adjustable. Quote
Jordain Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 PowerFC or Adaptronic are the easiest ways to control the motor and retain the VVTI. Stu, VVTI and Vtec are completely different... When i bought my beams... I thought I was getting Vtec but it's different. Vtec comes in around 6 grand or something like that and has like 2 cam settings... VVTi constantly changes I believe.. dunno, don't quote me baha! Quote
CanadianKE17 Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 As much as I like the idea of carbs, it seems that by the time you've got enough electronics to run distributorless ignition and vvti, you're about 4 injectors away from running fuel injection. Quote
