love ke70 Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 xany's a nerd! hhahahaha jks dude, theyre some nice specs you got their mate. u seem to know what ur doing when it comes to computers so i might through this out there and any help you can give me is appreciated, i have a amd athlon 2400 xp, 256 mg ram and an asus mother board, its over 2 years old and ive just added an 80 gig harddrive as id filled my other one so i now have 120 gb, this thing lags like a bitch when you do something as simple as just opening word, just wondering would i be best off upgrading my ram or my cpu to try and improve this? thanks mate, and btw your computer is a beast :S Quote
kangaroosa Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) Start by upgrading your RAM. Your CPU is heaps quick enough. Doing a full format and reinstalling your software will also help clear out heaps of crap, thus speeding your load times up. It amazes me how much the price of components have dropped in the last few years. I actually (budget) upgraded mine a few months ago. Heres Mine: AMD Athlon 64 3000 (939) Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 SATA option 1GB DDR PC3200 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256Mb Video card 400W Power Supply (Mmmmm Blue Lights Too). 1 X 200 GB 7200 RPM W.D. 8mb Buffer (existing) 1 X 160 GB 7200 RPM Seagate (existing) Well I've finished bragging. :S Top System Xany. If your into games, that thing will hammer. Edited December 26, 2005 by kangaroosa Quote

Then it may mean a compatible V/card etc. 3: Yep, thats the easiest way to backup your important info. 4: Office may have to be re-installed on the c: drive, not the e: drive. Sorry Xany. Spotlights back on you. :S Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 i have like, an xp1700 and er, an epox 8k3a motherboard? i think. 512mb ddr, but its only slow ram. i have a 128mb geforce of some description. 200gb to store my music, and an sblive of some kind cos onboard sound is horrendous i have no idea how many watts my power supply is, or hard drive buffers or speed, or the chipset on my pci sata card. but it's fast enough for nes/snes/n64/psx emulation, msn, torrents, photos, and mp3s, which is pretty much all i use my pc for these days anyway :S Quote
Xany Posted December 26, 2005 Author Report Posted December 26, 2005 hehehe, yeah it hammers through games now....i bought a PS2 a while back so i didnt have to upgrade my pc too often.....lol.....that went out the window when i pretty much stopped playing the playstation, cause i'm on the net all the time...:S Quote
Tiger Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) 1.4GHz Processor, 128 SD RAM!!!! (Not even DDR!!) Graphics card is I think 32Mb and it's running cable internet! :P Guess how many times a day I reset? ;) hahaha I definitely need a new computer. This was good for AutoCAD 2000 when I bought the computer brand new. Now.. its a CPU ready for the pension. by the way... well done on the new PC Simon :S Edited December 27, 2005 by Tiger Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 tiger, get 512mb ram, the rest of the system is fine. i hope to god you're not still on windows 98 Quote
Tiger Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Windows ME. It's been not too bad. Eventually when i upgrade my setup, then I'll run XP Pro. SJ, the price of 256Mb SD ram is the equivalent to 512Mb DDR ram... imagine 512MB SD!!! Not worth it for this computer... I'd rather buy another sub! :S Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 even an extra 256mb would improve things out of sight windows me is wierd. it's known as "windows mistake" in the industry. some people have nothing but constant trouble with it, and then you find computers where it runs more stable than even windows 2000. there's no pattern i have found, it just seems to be random. so if it's working for you, stick with it sick mate sick, subwoofer Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Tiger, find some ram second hand, that is the only thing letting you down, and format the HDD and install XP, it will run perfectly on that pc, and will make it faster. I have XP running on my second pc here, which is a P3 1Ghz, with 256 ram, and it runs like a dream. Quote
kangaroosa Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 (edited) 256 MB SDRAM PC133 $70 512 MB SDRAM PC133 $100 OR a really cheap sub. :S Second Thoughts. I have been meaning to upgrade my mums pc with my old pc gear (AMD 3000MHz). So maybe she has some SD RAM in her current system that you can have. I am still working up the energy to do it though. I'll get back to you. Edited December 27, 2005 by kangaroosa Quote
Redwarf Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 My God, it's a complete new language that I know nothing about! :S Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 you're not missing out on much, maybe alot of mountain dew and nights spent arguing on forums about different brands of processors, videocards, etc which in reality are like comparing apples and oranges Quote
