I am a perpetual widow shopper.... When it comes to cars (or traveling Amsterdam hahah). As in I love to look around to see what cool old cars are selling, how much for etc. but I never buy, just like looking.

Anyway I reckon it's gone to the dogs lately. eBay is rubbish these days, although still ok for cars it's terrible for parts.

Gumtree... Yeh maybe if I am a north burbs brogan who can't spell. Sweet. It was a modern looking site in 1997....

Usually I find myself jumping from forum to forum, ozdat, aus rotary, rollaclub, toymods. Carsales is great for current model commodore buyers.

Do you guys reckon it's harder lately? Does everyone else trawl numerous sights on the off chance of finding stuff?

Actually have found it harder looking for older cars lately. Have been looking around for either an old 60 series with a turbo that someone doesn't want nearly 8k for it and its still full of bogged up rust or an old 6 cyl cruiser either to tow my T18.

You'd think with the economy the way it is people would be selling things cheaper but its all over priced.

For my 4age I had to sit on my cash for over a month looking for one that wasnt over priced.

Forums are still your best bet I reckon. (except boost :P)

Yeh problem with forums is that it's so narrow.

I just like stumbling across random stuff. But even tough I go looking, I find it strange that I only come across something this cool in Australia.

By browsing a US website that's dedicated to jap cars.

Anyone use the trader anymore?

I've bought a few good Datsuns over the years by noting down their rego numbers when I saw them, getting the details from the Post Office & writing to the owners, or just chatting to them when they stop. I'd rather buy granny-spec than modded, so the forums aren't much use to me.

There's a lack of somewhere to sell a $1000 car on the web, and the big companies are gathering up the small websites and twisting them into their particular system. Our local paper no longer advertises cars for sale online, it directs you to Trading Post, which is a waste of time instantly. Gumtree seems to be the only hope.

Luckily i have access to a few ke's and early datsuns, But this is only due to friends fathers etc collecting them as teenages and holding onto them.

My ke10 i bought off a mate for $250 in a paddock, Until then i couldn't find a single ke10 in Tasmania at all.

So really i don't bother searching for a car i actually want to buy online anymore, I usually only have a look to see what's about.

Because there's never anything forsale that i want either near me, or for the price it's actually worth >|

thats one good thing about living out in a country town.....all the old farmers around here tend to just park their old rigs when they upgrade, which is why i have found a few good 'hayshed specials'. i havent paid any more than 500 for any of my projects over the last 8 odd years.

Gumtree is hands down the best!

Strongly agree! If you want a reliable old banger for under a grand there are heaps of good buys on Gumtree... in WA anyway. Got my Rona off Gumtree :)

I got my Avalon and my 67 Rolla off Ebay, just stumbled upon local bargains and went out and paid cash (I've never bid on a car).

Generally the best bargains arent on forums etc, or if they are, go within hours of being posted, just have to be lucky i guess, agree with buying them granny spec and finding them in the street, most people can be pursuaded into upgrading their cars if u have cash ready to buy there rust rolla. I lost count of cars after about 40 of them, prvate resell etc. Usually buy from word of mouth, boost, ae86dc, gumtree etc when a bargain comes up then sell on carsales, boost, my105 etc for top dolla

I have a collection of hand written notes which I keep in the car with me, when I see an older Japanese car that appeals to me, I just sling one of them under the driver's windscreen wiper. No luck yet, but hoping that these owners will want to update or get too old for driving at some stage and keep my info.

Alternatively, they just seem to pop up for sale on the side of the road somewhere, normally at the most inconvenient time - like just after I've paid a rego on another car or something! but if I really really want it, I'll make ends meet.

Seems more people are trying to get paid for the "potential" of the cars

Restoration projects beeing advertised at good condition prices.

Putting pictures of perfect cars in their adds to show how it might become,

not mentioning the cost, time & labor to restore them

I use rockauto, ebay and forums for parts. Mostly foreign ones as domestic have

very limited availability for old rolla parts

Spend way too much time browsing  but enjoy seeing how you get on with your projects
