hey all!

my names dan, 17, and I'm new to rolla's.. i recently purchased a 1983 model ke70 with a 5k conversion..

long story short, i pulled the head off today to do some work on it ( shave, port, polish, valve springs ) and i plan to do the cam also..

just wondering, because i have the D pistons.. and hydrolic lifters.. how do i go by re grinding my cam? iv read a few things on here, but still can't work out what to do..

what do i need, to do a solid lifter conversion on a 5k, with a 5k head?

also, what will happen if i regring my cam, but not change the lifters?

thanks!

Get the cam ground to suit the hydraulic lifters. Any decent cam grinder place will hook you up.

alright, so i don't have to change my lifters to have a re-grinded cam.. glad i got that worked out.. iv been stressing about it all day..

seeing as your at beerwah, or how ever its spelt.. do you know of any places around the gold coast / brisbane that would be able to do my cam?

thanks a heap

Just ring up Tighe or Wade cams and have a chat.

If you can't have your car off the road just get a k cam cheap and sent it to them,

Go with the pro's.

alright, ill do that on mondaY.. iv taken it off the road last week, and hope to have it back on in a couple weeks.. by getting a " k cam " you mean just a stock cam out of it? if so, thats what i plan to do.. and just re grind it..

also, do you have any idea how i go by working out what compression is good / what i want?

yeah, p plates.. but inturnal stuff dosnt really bother me.

i don't really have any achievements in mind.. iv just grown up around engine's my whole life.. and thought it wouldnt hurt pulling one apart and doing work on it, to learn from experiece..

in mind, for the next couple weeks, i plan to:

shave, port & polish the head, heavy duty valve springs, all that stuff..

then just the 25-65 270dur cam

tune my webber carby

new timing gear

lighten the fly

shimmer the oil pressure valve

then in a couple months, most likely rebuld the bottom end

and yeah, it will be a road car.. but more of a mess around car..

How much experience do you have of driving a car ?

There'll be a good chance that when you get pulled up by the 5-0, they'll notice your a P-plater, notice your driving a mod plated car and then ask for a tow truck.

And then you'll be branded a "hoon"

But all in all have a look on the FAQ.

In my opinion i wouldn't bother with a port and polish, maybe just port match the manifolds and that'd be about as far as i'd go.

You'd also want to be careful on your choice of cam, it might be a real pig on the street. Search the forum there's be at least one thread on the subject of k-cams.

I'd be careful on how much you shim the oil pressure valve, too much pressure can be just as bad as not enough pressure.

And don't forget to dial in the cam.

yeah, i know about that. ( the hoon stuff )

oh okay, so just scrap the polish idea? and yeah, i read somewhere you can just put a 2mm washer at the base of the spring?

and by having that cam, and possibly being a " pig on the street " you mean, it will drive normal untill at high rpm when the cam kicks in.. or it will drive worse then normal?

Yeah, unless your thinking of DIYing it yourself with something like a 120grit flap wheel or something just to get rid of any casting dags and to port match the head and manifolds.

Depends on the cam, it could drive worse.

Or it could be

nah i was going to get a place in town to do it tomorrow. but yeah

so a 2mm washer should be sweet.

and ha yeah, well ill give it a go anyway,

25-65, 270 degrees, 0.423" valvelift (best for powerful 4K/5K, alot of torque, 7500rpm peak power

by saying " powerful " does it mean forced induction, or just inturnal mods like I'm doing?

and if its too big for what i want, ill just get another cam and make it a 20-60 or something a little smaller then mentioned above

by pig on the street, he means you don't have any power until the cam kicks in. I can't find the cam card, but i have a massive cam in my ke70, and it doesnt kick into about 3300rpm, so you got to rev the f**k out of it to make decent power, but then it revs to 8500 all day. i think my cam is either that regrind or the next one up from memory.

oh okay, well yeah I'm going to speak to my mate tomorrow ( mechanic ) because he's done a bit with carb'd and cams.. so ill see what he thinks.. I'm leaning towards going 25-65 270dur and if i don't like it.. ill just get a smaller one..

Ring the cam grinder of choice and talk to "the man" if you can, not the receptionist.

Sit down and decide what you want from your motor. BE HONEST AND REALISTIC!!!!! Think of how many times you use more than 6000rpm on the street. Can you get away with the thing brapping away at idle with the P plates visible. Etc, Etc........

Give the man this information on what you want and the mods you have done/going to do and let him decide on the grind.

Did this with my 5K and was very happy. Didnt get the wildest cam on the market when I was competing, but while the others were bogging down and waiting to come onto the cam I was accelerating away :)

Had a 4K where the owner wanted it to make power from 4000rpm and it was almost impossible to drive at times. Would loop you around in the middle of a corner when it come onto its cam.

thanks for that..

iv been talking to a few people, and due to being 50/50 on street/highway driving.. i was thinking the 25/65 270dur wich peaks at 7500.. so I'm going to go the 20-60 wich is 6500 peak.. and if its still to big, ill just go a little smaller.. cam grind is going to cost $200 for hyrdo lifters from tighe

and iv also found a guy to shave my head. being 9.0 stock compression he wanted to run 9.5 but iv spoken to tighe and they have suggested 10:1.. so I'm going to get that @ the price of $150

also went out and purchased a new gasket kit
