Trendact Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 (edited) The only time I have heard of wheels fitted to spacers come off was on a rally car that got about 3 foot of air off a jump and landed on the left front wheel first and it gave way with the stress. So unless you plan on jumping or rallying/racing your car then it should be ok, it is more dangerous to fit wheels that are not quite the right stud pattern or PCD but still just fit as this will brake studs fast eg: HQ Holden & Commodore, Falcon & Mercedes. Super Jamie Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 well, geoff just related a story of wheels coming off with spacers i have also driven a car whose wheel nuts came undone with spacers on, tho i pulled over before i lost the wheel you need to be making alot of power to shear studs off with spacers, but it does happen. i reckon, why risk it? Dan Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Agreed; when it comes to things like that it really isnt worth risking it, rather prevent the situation. How much do the bolt on spacers sell for? Quote
Dyzza Posted December 21, 2005 Author Report Posted December 21, 2005 unless you plan on jumping or rallying/racing your car then it should be ok yeah but it was well put by super jamie - why risk it. Sure the rims look nice, but i could just flog them off and buy a new set for a few extra hunjed bucks. Or i could leave the 15s on the rear as they are now, and put on them 14" 5 spokers i have on that corona in the backyard ... paint em the same colour too. Cheers for the replies, Dyzza Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Obviously, I am was joking, my wheels haven't fallen off, and never will, and my long wheel studs and spacers are on the front, and being that my car is rear wheel drive, it wouldn't matter if I had 9000 million hp. And I have had a front wheel fall off, from someone attempting to steal my wheels, and loosening all the wheel nuts, I drove down to the local shops, and was coming home, and was doing about 60, and the front left wheel fell off, and the disc landed on the ground and made a nice flat edge. That was in my falcon, and no it didn't have spacers. My corolla is ridiculously low, has extremely low profile tyres on it, and has wheel spacers and long studs, and I have not had one issue yet, and the car in Tendact's story was a rally car, which will experience alot harsher conditions than you're road going corolla, so I am sure you will be fine. Yes I am aware they are illegal, yes I am aware they are not the ultimate way of doing things, but I am not going to stop using them, and I am pretty confident they aren't going to cause me too many hassles. ' I'm still up in the air abooot it all  Dyzza Yes I got my longer studs from repco, or autopro, can't remember which, but you wont like the price. I think from memory I couldn't get trade price where I was though, but they were $10 each stud, as opposed to $2 per standard length stud. oh yeah, nearly forgot. I got a pair of spacers today. The tool at autobarn claimed they were 6mm, but i honestly thought they were at least 8. Anyways, when i measured them up, they were 7 :y: . i put em on the front to see how they sit. With 7mm, the tyre sits 3 or 4mm away from the front strut .. pretty close i guess. while i was there, i got quotes on wheel studs - 12 bucks a pop :y:. *cough* ripoff * cough *. I stopped at the local joint up the road where the blokes know me, they are orderin some in for me a lot cheaper. the 12bucks included the stud and the nut, but i just need the studs (i don't need any nuts - got plenty of those ... hehe ). :) Dyzza Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Mine came with wheel nuts, which were needed, as I only had the corolla ones with don't have a hole on the other end, and wouldn't have done up. And how hard do the wheels touch the strut without spacers, because TRX rims touch the strut too, just enough so it leaves a nice shiny mark on the strut. If you can get enough clearance with 7 mil spacers, you wont need long studs. Quote
Trendact Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 and the car in Tendact's story was a rally car, which will experience alot harsher conditions than you're road going corolla, so I am sure you will be fine. That's right it was a rally car, a lot more stress on the car then a road car. I also know a guy that has had spacers on his rally car for a few years now with no probs and the car is a lot heavier then a Corolla. Some have had probs others have not but remember rally cars get about 10,000 times more stress on the wheels, studs, hubs, suspension, body etc... then your every day road car, It all comes down to personal choice. If you can get enough clearance with 7 mil spacers, you wont need long studs. the wheels touch the strut pretty hardcore without spacers, as in, you can't tighten the nuts up properly - and would get positive camber. and car barely moves. Does that clear it up :) The nuts i have are like little tubes, they have a locknut that does them up (locknut goes inside the nut; wheel brace goes on end of locknut like a normal corolla nut ... joisus i hope that makes sense). You mentioned i wouldn't need longer studs ... I think i might still. With the rims on with the spacers, the nuts only do up approx 3.5 full turns from when they first screw onto the thread until they are tight as. What do you think rolla_boy ? I don't think thats enough hey. Cheers, Dyzza Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Well, unlike most on here, I would just do that, my TRX rims only have a small number of turns til tight, and I have had them for a pretty long time, and used to have them on my coupe, did many highway trips with them on, also had a different set on my old KE30, did a few highway trips with them too, and none ever fell off, or gave me any sort of grief. I expect a whole bunch of replies about how stupid I am, and how dangerous it is, but I can only go by my personal experience. I also have 6 mil spacers on the back of my HARDTOP without long studs, and they haven't fallen off either. So it's up to you. Quote
Dyzza Posted December 22, 2005 Author Report Posted December 22, 2005 hey Got a call back from the blokes up the road, gettin studs brough up from NSW somewhere for $6 a pop. I'm cheerin' ... They won't be here till after the new year, hopefully in time for the 8/01 cruise up here! I might eventually put longer studs + spacers on the rear, but at the moment you can't really notice that they are sittin too far in. Longer studs + spacers on the rear means an extra 30.99 and 48 bucks... that's a new set of 6 x 9s! Dyzza Quote
