rian Posted July 16, 2013 Author Report Posted July 16, 2013 Good work mate. I've been on the road for 9 months and I'm still nit picking. Not happy with the tune or the rear suspension. You'll get there!!! Thanks Gavin. I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Are you going to bring your car on the cruise that's going to happen soon? My main issue at the moment is the starter motor, the starter motor won't turn the engine over when it's hot. So I think I will order a new one from work. There goes another $200 or so. Quote
It's_AUDM_Yo Posted July 16, 2013 Report Posted July 16, 2013 You can get starter motors rebuilt, which may or may not be a cheaper option you can look into. What happens when you turn the key does it make a clicking sound? My 4a was doing that and I just cleaned up all the wiring for the starter solenoid. Also as far as I'm aware all rwd 4age's had heat shields on there starters. Quote
GJM85 Posted July 16, 2013 Report Posted July 16, 2013 To bad about the starter. Cold just need a new solenoid. I plan on coming on the next cruise for sure. If it gets off the ground. Quote

I think it would cost more to get it rebuilt than it would to buy a new one, I spoke to an electrician who owned a 4AGE KE70 and he said the same thing. He said it's not worth rebuilding when you can get a brand newy for roughly the same price. When the engine is hot and you turn the key, the starter will wind over but really slowly and then just stop. I already tried cleaning the terminals and everything but it didn't make any difference. This one has a heatsheild on it, but it's still failing. I'm going to wrap the headers to see if it makes a difference. I think I'll get myself a smallport starter motor from work. It's_AUDM_Yo Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 Yeah smallport starters are better, I wrapped my headers for pretty much the same reason that and because I heard of peoples slaves getting melted. Orrrrr your alternator isn't charging properly but if its only when hot, you should be sweet. Quote
ke70dave Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 what is a new starter motor worth? I got mine rebuilt for around $150, same with my alterntor. Quote
rian Posted July 17, 2013 Author Report Posted July 17, 2013 ^I think a new one will be sub $200 from work. Next time I'm there I'll find out, if it's too pricey I will get it rebuilt. $150 is not too bad. Quote
rian Posted July 20, 2013 Author Report Posted July 20, 2013 So I ordered a new OEX(Ashdown) 0.8KW starter motor. Cost me $155. I did try to find the 1KW, 1.4KW and reduction starter motors in the database, there were some part numbers listed for AE93 4AGEs but all the mounting dimensions were wrong (the ʞ©$ɟ??). I actually found the part number for the reduction starter motor but I didn't realise what it was when I was looking at it, it was only $20 more, I wish I bought it :( Quote
rian Posted July 25, 2013 Author Report Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Got my starter motor today, I ordered a 0.8KW starter motor but a 1.2KW (according to the sticker and the quality control slip that came with it) starter motor turned up. It's also much lighter than a standard starter motor, the new one is 2.95kg compaired to the 4.5kg of the standard unit. Also got a new battery as the old one died yesterday. I'm not going to have any more starting problems! Edited July 25, 2013 by rian Quote
carbonboy Posted July 25, 2013 Report Posted July 25, 2013 I am jealous of your luck, don't say a word & I don't think they'll even notice! :) Quote
rian Posted July 25, 2013 Author Report Posted July 25, 2013 ^ The part number on the box was the same as the one I ordered, but the actual unit inside had a different part number. I guess OEX must have changed suppliers or something. I'm stoked about it. I managed to put the new starter motor in this afternoon, it sounds so powerful. The engine always started easy (except when it was hot) but now it actually sounds good while it's winding over. My exhaust rattle is gone too, the headers used to rattle against the heat shield on the old starter motor, but because the new one is smaller and doesn't have a heat shield it easily clears the headers. So it no longer sounds like shit over 4000rpm haha, however there is a pretty annoying exhaust leak. That will be the next thing I fix! Quote
It's_AUDM_Yo Posted July 25, 2013 Report Posted July 25, 2013 You liking the car anymore than before? Quote
rian Posted July 25, 2013 Author Report Posted July 25, 2013 I'm beginning to like it, my bank account hates it. It has so many shitty little problems that need to be sorted out, things that are going to cost money. I think once I get the exhaust fixed up and some new bushes I will like it a whole lot more, providing it doesn't break down... Quote
