Arnotjie Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Hi guys. I finally pulled my engine apart the other night, and it looks like I am going to need a rebore. I read on the FAQ for building a tough K motor that the standard repco pistons in 4k's tend to crack, However, aftermarket pistons in the same bore seem to be quite rare and expensive. So since I have to rebore it anyway, I would like to rebore it to a size that I could find better quality pistons for cheaper. So what would be a good size to bore it to, and what pistons should I use in the new size? How much should I expect to pay for a rebore? Cheers Quote
philbey Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 What makes you think they are difficult and expensive to get? I got a set of 5K pistons +40thou for 160 bucks? If you still have this trouble, there are a few people who've run 4AGE pistons and I think with a J or G motor conrod. But that could easily be more expensive. A rebore will be cheap. But you might as well get the block dipped, crack tested, bored, decked etc. Budget 500-1000 bucks depending on condition. Quote
Evan G Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Re sleeve it back to stock diameter is around $80 per bore, just get oversized pistons Quote
Arnotjie Posted November 18, 2011 Author Report Posted November 18, 2011 Thanks. I might go with the re sleeve idea  How big can you go with the oversized pistons? (sorry, I'm new at this) Philbey, What pistons did you get? Cheers. Quote
kickn5k Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 I might go with the re sleeve idea  Cheers. Re sleeving all 4cyls is a recipe for disaster!!! 1 or 2 is fine but the block will walk once all 4 bores are cut out! If this is for a daily driver it's best to keep the bores as thick as possible going too big will just make it run hot. I'd just go next oversize either .5 or 1mm. Quote
GJM85 Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 (edited) You say your new to this, yeah? Unless there's some serious scratching or ring wear in the bore you may get away with just a good hone. Edited November 18, 2011 by GJM85 Quote
altezzaclub Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Just bore it out to fit standard size 5K pistons, get an instant 1500cc! Have it sonic measured first so they can 'move' the bores to maximise the wall thickness. Worked here- http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/9525-Darrens-KE70-wagon Quote
