Corolla_Kid Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Have you considered polishing the cam covers? Quote
ancullen Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 Do you mean the ones I've got on it now, or the bluetop ones. I have considered it, but probably won't. It's got to be chrome or metallic for me. Quote
ancullen Posted October 6, 2006 Author Report Posted October 6, 2006 I've again just missed out on the big valve kit I had bid on on eBay. Damn I'm stupid. I should have placed a higher bid than the minimum. With any luck the seller will find a third set, or this sale will fall through. As it is, I need the money for tuning, but if the valves come up again, will buy them anyway and borrow some money to get my car's suspension and engine tuned. Quote
ancullen Posted October 16, 2006 Author Report Posted October 16, 2006 QUICK UPDATE: Just got the replacement intercooler fitted to the car. Took it for a drive, and the steering is TERRIBLE! Hopefully that will be fixed next Tuesday (the car's booked in for some suspension & steering work). Also, the acceleration is really, really crap. Our standard Starlet would EASILY out accelerate it. There's something seriously wrong I think. Hopefully that will be fixed Wednesday, as I've got the car booked for a dyno tune at the best tuner in Darwin (Hi Tech Tuning). Hopefully they'll find the problem, fix it cheaply and easily, and get me at least 100rwkw. Somehow I know this is going to cost me big time though. Quote
love ke70 Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 random thought...is it actually making boost? Quote
ancullen Posted October 17, 2006 Author Report Posted October 17, 2006 One would have to wonder. I'm sure they'll check all that when I get the dyno tune done on Wednesday. It feels slower than even a standard 4A-GE would be. Obviously the blower is going to create extra load on the motor, but I don't think it would create that much. It took about five seconds to get through first gear with my foot flat to the floor, and it didn't feel like the peak revs were all 7,500rpm. If it's the worst case scenario and I need a rebuild, I'll probably buy go turbo at the same time. Which means the car will be off the track for quite a while as I'll have to save some funds first. Quote
love ke70 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 try checking that you are making boost, if not its gonna be a waste of time and money goin to the dyno try disconnecting the intercooler piping somewhere, put your airfilter there and see if the charger blows air out. or the simple way would be to either A hook up a boost gauge, or B go for a drive with the intake breathing after the supercharger and the belt off the charger. this will show whether or not the charger is making any more power than the n.a motor anywho, i don't know if I'm making sense, but i hope i am. just don't wanna see you sent home from the dyno with a hole in your pocket all because of a problem you could have diagnosed sooner... ancullen Posted October 17, 2006 Author Report Posted October 17, 2006 Even if it is just a lack of boost problem, I want the car dyno tuned. In the time I've had it (18 months) it's never been tuned, plus I know it sat in someone's yard for ages prior to that. It also doesn't idle properly, and I really just want to see how much grunt it'll make. If the supercharger isn't working properly I'll have to invest in a turbo. Quote
love ke70 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 its your call, all I'm saying is its pointless tuning it without boost, coz it will have to be all done again anyway. hopefully that isnt the issue anyway :D Quote
ancullen Posted October 17, 2006 Author Report Posted October 17, 2006 If it's not getting boost, they'll be fixing that too. Quote
ancullen Posted October 19, 2006 Author Report Posted October 19, 2006 Apparently one of the problems with my engine has been the ignitor hasn't been working. B&W Ignitor - This is the three coil type, I only need a two coil one, and regardless of that, I need one that works. I don't know if this is the only cause of my problems, but at least it's one thing that's going to be sorted. Got to wait until the new one arrives from down south, and the company that sells them to my tuner won't do overnight bags for some reason. WTF? Quote
Sirolla[RL] Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Hi Adam, looking good man, you've done heaps since i last saw this beast, gotta see it when i'm back up...:D have you considered a twin-charger setup? Might be a heap more work but yeh, just an idea for ya ;) Hope everything goes well with everything, :) Quote
ancullen Posted October 20, 2006 Author Report Posted October 20, 2006 The twin-charger setup has never entered my mind as a serious modification. I've heard too many bad things about it. There is a guy up here who once claimed to me that he had an AE92 or something that he had almost completed twin-charging, but I think he might have been full of shit. I'll be going down the turbo-only route. I like the idea of sticking with the supercharger or going naturally aspirated, but a turbo seems the best way of making extremely good horsepower. The blower will be staying for a fair while to come though, either till it breaks or till I can afford the $2,000-3,000 for a turbo conversion & engine rebuild. Quote
ancullen Posted October 26, 2006 Author Report Posted October 26, 2006 After getting the new ignitor in, it appears one of the coils is stuffed. Dave (my tuner) was going to try and get another one in the car tonight (damn he's dedicated and works back late!), and I'm going to give him a call tomorrow morning to find out if my issues have been resolved and whether or not I'll be able to race on Sunday. I'm desperately hoping I'll be able to, but have a very strong feeling that I won't, as I haven't had much luck with this car. If the Corolla's not ready, I'll take the Starlet and leave the Corolla with Dave so he can sort all the issues out. Then over the Christmas break (this Sunday's the last race meet for the year) I'll do the RX-7/Peugeot brake conversion. Quote

Geez dude, I'm lucky I'm not having half as much trouble with my 4A as you are. I'm keen to see how you go with this RX-7/Pug brake conversion goes, even though I'm taking the 4A-GZE out of my KE55, I have plans for it afterwards. Hope you get all the issues sorted soon dude, they're a bucket load of fun when they work properly! Quote
