Nostalgia Posted May 31, 2012 Author Report Posted May 31, 2012 Okay so haven't posted here in a while, here's what's been happening! Done about 3000 miles in 6 months He's been to Launceston and back in a massive storm on Christmas night, where the dodgily put in windscreen was leaking torrents through both corners! Got that fixed for free. Went to Falls Festival, got so many looks and comments :) but when I wasn't at the campsite, got planked on by someone over 100kgs, putting 2 dents in the grooves across the roof, and a kind of longish dent/crease across the curve in the roof above the rail. :( Can you suck them out? Put on a new front bumper, though it's not perfectly straight and giving me the willies. We mounted a Kenwood headunit in the glovebox, with 2 Alpine Type R 6x9s in boxes in the boot, which I have since sold for $200, they didn't have the sound I wanted. Not enough quality over the WHOLE dynamic range and too much kick. Looking for a new solution, thinking of making a small setup in a custom card in the tailgate but we'll see :). Drove him for a while, all good, then started having heating problems because the thermostat got clogged with rusty water, then the temp started fluctuating like mad. Got it looked at and he slightly blew a head gasket. With Uni assignments over, had some time with a mate to fix him up, so what we did was: ~ New headgasket ~ New airfilter ~ New oil ~ Cleaned a lot of snotty crappy oil out of the rocker cover ~ New thermostat and gasket ~ New manifold gasket ~ Flushed cooling system a few times then new coolant ~ Topped up brake fluid (almost empty haha) So we got him all started and he started, idled and revved but there were two problems ~ A lot of white 'smoke', though it was dark and cold tonight. Thought maybe it was water in the exhaust as the manifold sat off for a while and its been wet lately.. Hopefully, going to wait until daytime tomorrow and let it idle for 15 minutes or so and watch. ~ More of a problem, there's a lot of space when I'm pushing down the accelerator before it starts to rev, and once it started to rev it only has about 30-40mm left, and when its 'full throttle' it doesn't rev as high as it used to and splutters and dies. The part of the cable that is in that folded rubber sheath thing seemed kind of slack, but I'm pretty sure we didn't muck around with anything, just disconnected the accelerator cable and choke cable from the carb. :'( Any ideas please? Jono.C Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Did you do the timing after you did the headgasket? Quote
Nostalgia Posted June 1, 2012 Author Report Posted June 1, 2012 No we didn't, I don't have that much experience but my mate does, and he didn't mention it. By hand it revs so well now though, it used to take a while to pick up revs just in neutral, but now it's way more responsive. The accelerator pedal is kinda loose and flappy too, not springing back much etc, I'm thinking the accelerator cable just needs adjusting, I just don't know how to do it. Quote
Nostalgia Posted June 2, 2012 Author Report Posted June 2, 2012 All good now, my mate attached the accelerator cable to the same part as the choke haha, so silly Quote
PHATKE20S Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 Where are the promised pic's mate? This thing should give you plenty happy motoring now Quote
Nostalgia Posted June 3, 2012 Author Report Posted June 3, 2012 Haha yeah I forgot about those! I'll have to wait for some nice weather and some free time (uni exams start Saturday!) then I'll get some up :) Went to look at a 4k out of a 55 today, everything fan to fly, except for fan haha. Looked a little grotty, but didn't use oil or water and never skipped a beat apparently! Going to give it a clean up then drop it in :) maybe work it a little while it's out, putting a cam in will be a lot easier when it's out, and getting some compression going! But yeah paying $100 :) pretty happy Quote
Nostalgia Posted July 23, 2012 Author Report Posted July 23, 2012 (edited) Okay so the head in the 3k is cracked :( so we've put in the 4k, using the manifolds and carb from the 3k as my exhaust wouldn't fit up to the manifold (when I get extractors and exhaust I'll swap it all over), and got it started and managed to baby it home, but having a few troubles. ~ although when it goes well it goes SO well and has SO much more torque (feels like normal car woo) 60% of the time when I accelerate it starts to splutter about 2500 - 3000rpm, sometimes I can push through it, others it just dies and makes almost zero noise until BANG backfire. The accelerator and choke cables are now on different angles as the rocker cover mounting for them is in a different position now and aren't aiming straight to the carb anymore, that could affect it? ~ The alternator wont charge the battery, as the one plug has three metal bits (name escapes me) and the other only has 1, but they connected up so we thought we'd try anyway. Didn't work haha. ~ The temp guage wire had to be extended because the male part was on the right side of the thermostat housing on the 4k instead of the left, so we extended it by soldering in some speaker wire, but the temp is either cold as a rock or above the highest point, even when the engine is cold and not running. Any help? Cheers, Toby Edited July 23, 2012 by Nostalgia Quote
LukeAE71 Posted July 23, 2012 Report Posted July 23, 2012 For the temp gauge you need to use the temp.sender from the 3k as it is the right one for the car. Hope that helps fix it Quote
Nostalgia Posted July 23, 2012 Author Report Posted July 23, 2012 (edited) Hey, which bit is the sender? The part of the termostat, or just the wiring? EDIT: just did the research, didn't think there'd be much info on such a part. Thanks :) I might get a new sender, I'll see if Repco has them. If not I'll just swap it over. Thanks mate! rolla van man Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 This thing is cool as hell bro!! Well done on the find and what work youve done so far!! Cheers, Leigh Quote
Nostalgia Posted October 31, 2012 Author Report Posted October 31, 2012 Cheers Leigh! 4k is going well, thought I had a scare in the heat yesterday but was just the fan shroud rattling in high revs haha Found some 13 x 8 jellybeans with tyres in 4 x 110 for $150 yesterday, went back to try them on today and after breaking a socket I found that the lugs weren't long enough.. I don't LOVE the wheels, but they're pretty cool and cheap, so I had a read around and found these "Cheater" nuts that have some extra grab that gives you more grab on the thread further down the hole, but it sounds kinda dodgey. Any ideas? Quote
Jono.C Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 Chuck up a photo? I've got a few sets of nuts you could try Quote
Nostalgia Posted October 31, 2012 Author Report Posted October 31, 2012 Didn't take any, what are you doing tomorrow dude? Wanna come have a look? By the way, buying a set of those extractors off that dude tonight :) Quote
