Whatsausername? Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Done my diff research, And honestly it's giving me a headache, People say yes and no to the same diffs? -_______- Just looking for some straight/simple answers... Common diffs that I found... Does it have?...Will it need?... (Yes or no answers would be best) (Bolt straight on?) |Disk/Drum| |LSD| |Mount Modifications| |Need to be shortened| |Ratio (If known)| Tarago (YR22): Corona: Hilux (R?41): If you know of any other simple diff conversion solutions PLEASE let me know! Whatsausername? Posted October 11, 2011 Author Report Posted October 11, 2011 Oh, And it's for a KE70 haha Quote
agius Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 grab a t18 diff fits streight in with a manual t18 tail shaft you can find lsd's for them, they fit streight in to a ke70. Quote
love ke70 Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 details on car, weight, power, grip levels, driving styles and intentions are going to help people suggest the diff you need... Quote
Whatsausername? Posted October 11, 2011 Author Report Posted October 11, 2011 Well from all the conversion builds and threads I've been reading it look like I'll have to get another diff...And why I. LSD so popular, isn't a locked diff better??? And the weight, unsure seeing how the car is in pieces, and I'm putting an SR20DET in it withe the SR box for now. Also, what is better, disk or drum? :/ Cheers for the replies :) Quote

Save yourself the hassle later down the track and just get a hilux or r31 diff shortened and the mounts relocated rather than fixing/ replacing a cheaper diff every couple of months. LSD is popular as they are legal for road use, where as locked diff are illegal and can be frustrating to drive daily. Disks are better than drums. Disks are easier to work on and maintain although drums will still get the job done. Quote
chestikoph1 Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 (edited) Hi Nathan Speaking from personal experience i recommend the skyline r31 diff, i am running one behind a sr20det. It can handle the power pretty easily, 4 pinion, and 28 spline axles are sufficient, good ratios choices 3:7, 3:9, 4:1. You have got the option of factory LSD, their not the greatest but can be built up to be nice and tight, or you can get KAAZ 1.5/ 2 way LSD centers or mini spool or full spool. They also come with disk brakes. You will need to get the casing and axles cut down, get the correct pitch wheel studs ( or run nissan wheel nuts ) and shorten your tail shaft to suit. Also need custom handbrake cables made up. Diff complete second hand should cost between $150-$250 Shortening and assembly, around $1500+ KAAZ centers around $1000 ( best option ) Factory LSD center new around $500 second hand around $100-$150 ( but will need re-build ) Spool's $100 New gear sets $500, second hand $150 Hand brake cables around $200 Recommend getting the calipers rebuilt ( the hand brake system is usually seized on them ) Rebuild kits are cheap and you should be able to do that your self, and a new set of rotors is cheap enough. Well there you go mate, thats a fair bit of info for you on the r31 option. Good luck....... Edited October 11, 2011 by chestikoph1 Quote
Whatsausername? Posted October 12, 2011 Author Report Posted October 12, 2011 As much as I love the R31 diffs it's a bit too expensive and impractical for me, The money I would save if I got another diff could go towards something more usefull, But I really appreciate the suggestion and help chestikoph1.... I read somewhere that the diff out of the luxury Coronas have disk brakes and they bolt straight into a KE...Can anyone confirm this? And also, How would I go about changing the ratio?...Do I buy it seperate or another diff?... What is the most practical ratio for drifting?.....And why can't the stock ratio be used? A lot of questions I know but I appreciate every comment anyone gives me! :) Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 12, 2011 Report Posted October 12, 2011 Why would you want discs on the rear? The only advantage they have is that they are easier to change pads on. The disadvantage they have is the pathetic handbrake system. I wouldn't rate them a big deal. To change ratio you replace the crownwheel & pinion, not the whole assembly. Do you know how the LSDs work?? and their differences to a locked diff?? What you do with the car will be important, whether its a road car or not, whether you want it to handle corners or not... Personally, the number one thing would be getting an LSD, followed by the right ratio if you're going to do any sports driving. A car setup for hillclimbs is not one you would want to go on holiday in! Quote
BUZ440 Posted October 12, 2011 Report Posted October 12, 2011 The info above is probalby one of the best responses I have seen towards a question, If you have an SR20 in front, it will hold up, as been mention and in chestikoph rides thread, he has gradually fed power into the stock diff, and got along quite well, and from what i can read does not have an aggressive tune, but I'm unsure how much weight he has over the back, R31 is almost the same as Commodore live rear ends, unless you are not prepare to throw at least $1200 in the rear end you gonna chew through diffs like tim tams, Quote
Whatsausername? Posted October 12, 2011 Author Report Posted October 12, 2011 Well the plan is to finish this build by Christmas/New years, Hopefully it will be roadworthy and register it for 6 months, Use it for weekends and just whenever, Give the rolla an odd thrash here and there then when the 6 months are up ill have a new ute, so probably just track car, strip the weight, increase the power and THEN get a new diff (R31 diff with minispool).... Thinking the '1984 ST141 Corona Avante' diff should hold up by then...Is a LSD available for this or? Quote
