BenH_Ke70 Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 I'm looking at putting a smallport 4ag in my ke70 and want it as daily, what things will need a mod plate? my thoughts are -Engine -fuel pump and surge tank -want to run twin carbs, does anyone have this in rego'd car? does it pass omissions or watever? -ae86 suspenion/brakes up front -lowered springs can't think of anything else for now should i just get the engine and fuel pump nshit mod plated and do suspension and stuff after :P Quote

Call up an engineer, make an appointment and take your car down there. Any answers you get over the internet are quite possibly going to be wrong. Quote
xmoht Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 You only need a mod plate if the engine is a going from a four cylinder to a V8, if it's stock V6 you can put in anything up to a V12 in which case you need a mod plate. All the other mods are basically a component of this, and therefore unless you put in a V8 or bigger you don't need mod plate. Mod plate needed for wheels though if going 18 inch diameter or bigger if the stock wheels are under 14 inches. Quote
BenH_Ke70 Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 more of a case of cross the bridge when i get there i guess, just want some idea of what will need mod plates before i start buying parts and what not I have looked at QLD modifications guide, but it sooooo long and hard to find specific details Quote
BUZ440 Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 In QLD you can 95% mod plate anything on any car, (yes that includes neons) This day in age you want to make sure you are covered in the event of inspections, Do it properly the first time and you will never have to worry Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 If you can't even be bothered to look in the right place, how do you expect to ever find out? Just do whatever you want and then suffer later on, or talk to an engineer now and then you will know. I can't believe you refuse to talk to an expert but still want info from a forum full of random people in different states and countries with different laws. What is the world coming to? If you want the info then you need to talk to an expert or read the rules. Cross that bridge now or youll be stuck on the wrong side of shit creek. Quote

What I was looking for was peoples personal experience with getting these mods signed off legally, because surely on a site dedicated to people owning and modifying corollas that it has been done before right? honestly I'm not going to book an appointment, I don't have money for that just yet and havn't even done any of these things to my corolla yet... I am just wanting to here from people that have done similiar mods, thought I was looking in the right place.. obviously not haha Quote
irokin Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 There's too many ifs and buts to give you a definitive answer. We'd have to know the intimate details of exactly what you're planning to do and ask just the right questions to be able to give you the right information. Even then there's the potential for it to be completely incorrect. The process is the same with an engineer, except he's more qualified to answer the questions and will ultimately be the person that you have to please. This will give you the basics but its not comprehensive: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c792a0c9-92b1-43ee-933b-7bdd8b20842f/pdf_modification_motor_vehicles2.pdf But if you want unqualified opinion and speculation here you go: -Engine -fuel pump and surge tank -want to run twin carbs, does anyone have this in rego'd car? does it pass omissions or watever? -ae86 suspenion/brakes up front -lowered springs can't think of anything else for now should i just get the engine and fuel pump nshit mod plated and do suspension and stuff after :P -Mod plate (insufficient information) -No mod plate but there are rules to abide by for safety. Also a surge tank for carburetors is rather unnecessary. -You really need to have a better look around here -Mod plate for the brakes -No mod plate but rules to adhere to Do all your mod plating in one hit if possible. It gets messy otherwise. Quote
BenH_Ke70 Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 So really what I should of asked Has anyone in QLD - put a smallport 4age into an 82 ke70 -with a fuel pump in the boot -and run ae86 suspension up front -and got it regoed like that, recently? did you need mod plate for anything? surely that sort of setup can't differ so much in the rule books that I MUST see an engineer to know for sure It can be done? either way i will have to see an engineer I know this Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Well get mad and hurt if you want my friend, I feel my response to your query has your best interests at heart. Its not always down to what you have done, but quite a lot of shit can go wrong (or right) depending how you do something. You don't have to book an appointment and take your car down there like a roadworthy before the car is modified, but you do need to give them a call and describe in way more specific detail your plans and make sure you don't raise any red flags. They will happily talk to you for 10-15 to make sure you are on the right track. For example, I have tried to be very slick with the way everything has come together in my AE71, I got a mod plate last year and they wanted to do engine, seats, and the brakes. I used a JDM ae86 diff that bolted in so no mod plate needed. Same with my fuel system, was from a jdm ae86 and didnt require plating. He inspected my seat rails and how the seats were fitted and then was happy to plate the car. Other things you may be required to do would be to reduce the seating capacity if you remove the rear seat and belts for weight reduction or to fit a cage. Most people wont plate a car for wheels or suspension as that's too easy to change anyhow. You get in trouble for that if you don't flare your gaurds to cover or lower the car too much. To find who to call, you can have qld transport fax you the list of approved persons to look over your mods. Its not a comptrehensive list of all who can do the work but its all the ones that take enquiries from the general public, and as such they don't mind getting initial calls to kick ideas around, thats part of the process. ke70dave Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 the problem is, engineers and their requrirements also vary. there is no consistancy with it all, the rules they go by are guides and generally include a clause that sais "to the engineers discretion" i had a 16V bigport mod plated no problems in ke70, though i did know the engineer..but its a bolt in conversion. the carburetta conversion may be slightly different, as it is no longer a standard engine anymore. you really do need to ring someone up about this, as like i said its up to th engineers discretion alot of the time. which varys. i would guess that you would require emissions testing with that carburetta, but i can only speculate. fuel pump in a the boot is a fail of an idea, either do it all intank, or mount everything under the car (yes its possible, i had a surge tank and 2 pumps mounted under the car) you do not want a noisy smelly fuel pump buzzing away in an enclosed area. i was also told there was no mod plate code for the ae86 suspension/brakes in my ke70, on similar grounds to what little red said. but things might have changed as that was prolly 2yrs ago now. BenH_Ke70 Posted October 11, 2011 Author Report Posted October 11, 2011 Oright thanks everyone, NO I'm not hurt and mad little red spirit, I know i gotta talk to an expert  I will be having a chat with an engineer or a few, I know it can all be done and certainly has before but your saying there is certain standards that have to be maintained and different engineers will give you diff feedback on what they want. Thanks again Quote
