ToasticlesAe82 Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Yeah i'm wondering if i need a bigger battery more cas and ccas because when i go to start the car i turn the key and there is a little lag until the car starts up, or maybe alternator? Any info on this topic would help cheeers guys. Quote
towe001 Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Battery would be something around the 350cca Lag ? Like it winds over a bit before starting, like wore wore wore and then it fires ? Thats more like the dwell is out and/or the ignition timing. If it has more of a sluggish sound or slow as it winds over, it could either be the battery getting old or the cabling from the battery to the starter getting old. Another thing to try is pulling the terminals off the battery and cleaning them with hot water and sand paper, and do the same thing (but just with the sand paper) on the connections on the starter and ground. Its cheap and free if you have the sand paper laying around. Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 If the battery winds it over quickly straight away then its tuning as Towie said. How does it run once its going?? Idles OK, goes up hills OK?? The points slowly wear closed which robs the motor of ignition advance and it loses power & starts poorly. The other sad option for hard first starting is a head gasket leaking... Quote
ToasticlesAe82 Posted October 2, 2011 Author Report Posted October 2, 2011 yeah it sort of goes like this: 1. Turn keys (lights on the dash come on) 2. doesn't turn over just nothing 3. cranks and starts. it doesn't idle well at all particularly cause it's done near 500 thousand k's but i will do as you've said tomorrow and see what happens :) cheers for the help i shall let you know how it goes - Craigo Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 If it cranks fine when it does, then its a solenoid problem or ignition key. Strip the starter and solenoid. Put a washer under the big copper contacts inside the solenoid to push them closer to the copper bar. That's where the 300amps goes through. Check the brushes in the starter motor & clean up the rotor face they run on with sandpaper. A problem there usually makes it turn slowly. The contacts in the ignition key setup may have eroded, that can be stripped and checked, and sanded clean if needed. Its quite fiddly to do with lots of little bits of copper. Keep an eye on all the wiring for a burnt or broken or corroded contact somewhere. Quote
