nerfbat Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 (edited) wasnt sure if id bother with a 'Rides' thread. In fact, i was going to sell her for a mate's 'Rolla, as i didnt have the time to do what is needed. But then Master Yoda(Luke/mate from the forums) said: "Power, she will have. Patience, you will need" let me Iterate, this is not to criticize previous owners. i bought her 'as is' and checked her over before handing over the cash. i bought 'the dream' or what she will become, much like Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter ultimately wanted, the chrysalis to the butterfly. So here we are I figured what I'm learning as i go, may help others. you've all prob seen Mason's Ride thread, so i wont bore you with the details. Bought her pretty much as seen here: when i saw her, i fell in love, as my first car i learnt to drive in was a baby sht yellow KE36, so i jumped at the chance to get her. thx Mason. when looking at her, i thought the height looked good, til i drove her home, dammn near needed a kidney belt, lol. so during the next week, i tidied up what i could, for the roadie to xfer it to my name. Luke and I thought it may be a lil low for passing RWC, so i thought I'd drop a set of stocko springs under her til it passes. it was there i found: :-/ pro tip no 12: when chopping springs, at least leave a 'seat' on them' so in went: more to come Edited October 6, 2011 by nerfbat Quote
ae824ate Posted September 17, 2011 Report Posted September 17, 2011 I have been waiting for this  I hope it was all well documented lol. Ill say it too, he/we are not criticizing or singeling out ANYONE. Good job on her so far Zowie! Quote
Crowie55 Posted September 17, 2011 Report Posted September 17, 2011 This is the rollaclub whore, please tame her and tell me your going to change the paint? what are your future plans? will be watching this one closely. Cheers, Crowie Quote
nerfbat Posted September 18, 2011 Author Report Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) cheers Brad, yeah she will be tamed, and paint changed etc. tho, i will mos probably do paint last, as i am not afraid of the odd car park bump in her, at Uni(where i work), all those darn P platers, lol doing it right, and will take time. ive always been a fan of the N/A ole skool engines(I'm an ole man, so my era, lol) so i have been tracking down a decent side draught set up on the 5K. Luke and I got a pair of Dellorto's off ebay a while back and i figured I'd try a single 40+mm DHLA or DCOE webber(when cash permits) was in Auto barn a while back and literally stumbled across a Redline single side-draught manifold, so i have the soft mount kit and a 40 mm Dellorto ready to pop on her for now. in the past i've run both twins, and singles, and found trying to keep the twins in tune, etc got to me after while, so ill see what i can get out of a single, first i have been taking a lot of pics over the short time ive had her. will put some more up later thanks, Zowie Edited September 18, 2011 by nerfbat Quote
nerfbat Posted September 23, 2011 Author Report Posted September 23, 2011 got her passed roady and in my name today. will post more pics up when i can. have taken a sht load since i bought her. huge thanks to Master Yoda(Luke) for all his fabrication work, moral support and allround nice guy'ed ness..! i finished work early today, get home, get stuck into the intake/exhaust setup, wanting to get her sorted, so I could get the rego transfer to my name, before they close at 4pm. and over comes Luke, welder in hand/s, and gets me fixed, all good to go by 3pm..! a true legend..! so off i rush, expecting them to come out and confirm numbers, etc, like they used to. nope. i could have turned up in a POS rust bucket for all they care, now. they didnt come out, simply charged me the transfer fee, and waved me off, as i left, lol. apparently now, the onus is on the roadworthy inspector that all numbers, etc match. they simply fill in the details, on the PC.... i was stressing over nothing.. Mason can now breathe easier, knowing its out of his name now. more pics to follow. once again, Luke. you are the man /salute Quote
nerfbat Posted September 25, 2011 Author Report Posted September 25, 2011 Redline extractors from Darryl Bonell at Autozone Performance in T'mba for $250 http://www.autozoneperformance.com/ Test Fit, notice battery relocated from engine bay(will do a nice engine bay shot when she is tidied a bit more) a few of the manifold bolt holes were stripped(re threading here) test fit of intake and exhaust, note the variance in flange thickness at the face. chose to pack out the extractor bolt points, rather than machining the intake, for fear of going thru the wall. after a wash today, i decided to take her for a run to the Japanese Gardens for a couple of pics got this a while back, just waiting on boss kit to arrive. wanted to keep that ole skool SAAS feel to the wheel, unlike the newer space age looking ones(my opinion) Got a Tighe 150A cam to go into her(thanks Luke), but waiting on a head i can do up, to suit her, heavy springs, shave, 3 angle seat job, maybe bigger valves, if needed. can't seem to find the vacuum advance line to tap into from the Dellorto, so i'm running none, til i can find the right spot to tap into. if anyone knows, or can point me into the right direction, i'd appreciate it. more to follow as i can thanks for taking the time to read Quote
SLO-030 Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 I'm loving it man! WD40 is a matte paint rejuvinator if you want to get it looking a little better after a wash. Quote
nerfbat Posted September 27, 2011 Author Report Posted September 27, 2011 Cheers mate Will test WD40 this arvo, too :-) Quote
SLW42 Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 I hope mason gave you his massively oversized gearshifter add on that he had at ajd, that was awesome, It's good to see it's getting some love and attention :) Quote
36panvan Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 Glad to see it went to a good home, goodluck with your plans can't wait to see what you do with it :y: Quote
philbey Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 You don't need to machine the manifold, simply take to it with a file and a set of verniers; file off the nut side, not the head side. Mine took 30 minutes to finish, much better than packing and low risk. Quote
nerfbat Posted September 27, 2011 Author Report Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) thx guys, and yeah Philbey, i ended up going a compromise between the 2. took some meat off the alloy, and then packed out the exhaust a bit, also. then took it to Robbie Mann at Mufflers kings, and got all new studs and bolts fitted, he also put a flange after the extractors for me, for ease of removal. the engine bay as it stands now: got to tidy it up a lot now. will also take a pic in the daylight tomorrow of the new stud points, etc Edited September 27, 2011 by nerfbat Quote
nerfbat Posted September 30, 2011 Author Report Posted September 30, 2011 So, I have the work car for 3 weeks, so i figured i'd rip out the stock cam and put in the monster Tighe 150A i got from Luke http://tighecams.com.au/cars.htm 290 degree, 0.474" lift rough power from 2750-6500 RPM Now, when we got the timing cover off, it looked like it had a motorcycle chain, or similar, on the gears. It just didnt look 'right. it had none of the shiny links or any other indicators to line up when setting the cam up. it also had a 'joiner' in it, like you see on any bike chain, with the circlip. etc. there were pink marks on the top cog and a pink mark on the chain, that looked like a perma marker. I assume that whoever put this cam together, used those marks as a guide? now this is where things fell into place for me. i got to to back a bit in time.... *queue eerie twilight zone intro music* "Imagine you have purchased a sexy rolla, you get it home and put a timing light over the engine, as on the way home, it pinged under load. but, as you aim the light at the marks, you discover.." *Dun dun dunh..!* "The light is showing you are approx. 25 degrees BTDC" /end corny bit now So, i assumed something wasnt right. i eliminated what i could was the crank pully marked wrong? was the dizzy set up wrong? had the crank pulley keyway broken or worn? it was weird at the time.. now, at least i can assume, its the cam was out a tooth or 10. So i'm ordering a Rollmaster dual row set today. also ripping out the flywheel and taking 400kgs off it(jkes), well as much as i can, without weakening it. also, have to machine cam towers down by 3.5mm to make up the difference in the regrind cam. fingers crossed, it may be back together in a week. will take a pic of the timing gear and put it up. I'd like your imput on WTF it is. as I'm only recently back into the car 'game' after a 10 yearish layoff, i may be looking at a good set, and have NFI... thanks for your time, Zowie Quote
altezzaclub Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 Where did the battery end up? Stock place, other side or inside? Do you reckon Toowooba's altitude will affect things like cams, jetting, timing??? Quote
Evan G Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 i used a dial indicator and a camshaft degreeing kit to dial my cam into day. used the stock timing marks and found it was still 3 teeth out (or 60 degrees)!?! Quote
