ke70btk Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 So, seems i have finally got myself some decent work. Lots of travelling involved though. So i'm just gonna ask. What kind of car should i get for very long highway driving. Mostly looking for something with a little power and sort of economical as i will be travelling 1000+ km to and from some jobs. For instance, i'm taking a risk at the minute with my dodgy camry. I was honestly thinking about a commodore ute, doesn't matter if its turbo, v8, n/a, diesel, doesn't bother me one bit. Will be carrying clothes and fishing gear only and maybe a few jerry cans of petty. Thoughts guys? Quote
irokin Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 Mk5 VW Golf TDI ... or pretty much anything euro will eat up the miles. Whatever you get make sure it has cruise control. It might sound gimmicky or annoying or whatever but it makes a huge difference to how fast you fatigue. Quote
ke70btk Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 I think its safe to say that a mk5 golf is well out of my price range. Looking to spend around 0 dollars to 4000 monies. Quote
7shades Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 1UZ Soarer. Cheap to buy, comfy as hell, all the electric fruit, and they're actually very economical on the highway. About 7L/100k's. Quote
ke70btk Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 I was considering a 1uz celsior, heard there alright with highway k's, can any one confirm? Quote
7shades Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 Yeah same same... For some reason the Soarers seem to be cheaper but the Celly's are just as good. Bit heavier, and a bit more to (potentially) go wrong with the airbag suspension and stuff though. With normal servicing a 1UZFE will run forever... Just budget for a timing belt every 100k, and a rear main seal every 200. Quote
ke70btk Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 Completely forgot the airbags in the celly's, but that would make one comfy ride for sure. But i was informed today, that alot of the places where i'll be working up north are only accessible via 4wd. ruining my dreams once again. Quote
towe001 Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Damn shame you can only go up to 4 grand. I would have said Great Wall V200 Quote
orangeLJ Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 VT-VX commodore V6 wagon :) Cheap and reliable, easy to work on, cheap, space for your stuff (out of the weather) and cheap. did I mention cheap? haha. Id say VU ute, but they are still out of your budget. Anything euro is going to cost you in initial purchase price and more again with parts (plus being out of your price range at the moment) The other option would be something like an AE112R rolla, not overly powerful, cheap to run and reliable/modern enough though. The commodore will be the nicest to do long drives in though, cheaper to insure that a soarer too I would imagine. Quote
irokin Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Damn shame you can only go up to 4 grand. I would have said Great Wall V200 Hah. I've often wondered if greatwall owners are embarrassed every time they drive their abomination. I certainly make my best effort to gawk at them disapprovingly. Quote
7shades Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Hmmm... Cheap, reliable, economical, 4wd. Only one option really... BAM Quote
ke70btk Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 I lol'd at this ^^ looking at a ford maverick with duel fuel and long range gas tank. just what i need really. Quote

Fear factor http://www.gwownersforum.com/ http://www.gwownersforum.com/introductions-showcase/topic4.html Their a better built vehicle then what the old hyundai was when they first came into australia. In a way the only let down is the 2.4Lt motor and its power to weight ratio. Quote

In a way the only let down is the 2.4Lt motor and its power to weight ratio. Which isn't saying much. Early Hyundais were utterly dire... Actually even later Hyundais. They've only lifted their game in the last 5 years or so. There is a Greatwall dealer just around the corner from me and I chat to the guys in the service dept sometimes. They are replacing a lot of *everything* under warranty, especially the 4WD models. Clutches, gearboxes, other drivetrain components. Important bits. Mind you, that's not much worse than the Navara/Triton... Even if they had the driveline sorted I still wouldn't go near one. They're ugly as sin, build quality is awful, the rattle and vibrate, and the interiors are... Urgh.... A sea of cheap nasty recycled toy plastic. Quote
