Felix Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 i think it is funny. you guys are telling redwarf who has had more motorsport experience than all of you combined, about what is a good L series engine. :D Quote
Redwarf Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 (edited) Its not about the revs, its about the head design.... An L20 head is a peice of junk, just a bad design, they have a tendency to detonate even when standard with low compression. The L18 head on the other hand is an awesome design and it is possible to run some pretty high compression ratio. Most people put the 1800 head on the 2L, but if you can't be bothered go the 1800. Also according to factory figures the 1800 had more power anyway, less torque though.... :D Ummm.... not just any L18 head, you need one marked A87, they're the good one's, and if you're building any half decent Dustbin engine, that's what you'll be using. You use a particular con rod too, most commonally found in L26 (maybe 24's, can't remember) engines. There's actually some really good books on how to build hot Datto engines out there, some really good reading. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Felix... :jamie: Edited November 27, 2005 by Redwarf Quote
Super Jamie Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 head is a peice of junk, just a bad design as if that ever stopped anyone before *pets and strokes his 4k* Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 i think it is funny. you guys are telling redwarf who has had more motorsport experience than all of you combined, about what is a good L series engine. :D I'm not trying to tell him anything other than the reasons my friend gave me for doing what he did. Either way, whatever he did, he did it right, because it goes like a freak!! ROCK ON 4K :jamie: hehe Quote
Super Jamie Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 ah shaddup, 2 months ago you were going on and on about how much you loved the damn things :hmm: Quote
Felix Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 4k's are alright. must have wasted a hundred or so falcadores with my old 4k. a light weight ke1x helps. a 5k is better though, easy power, don't have to rev the f@$ker. torque is good, i can do second gear takeoffs on my 20 degree driveway with my 5k. only need 2nd and 5th gear for daily driving. LOL. 5th pulls well from 30 kays. Quote
nhillau Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 I have got a Twin SU manifold to suit Datsun L Motors, sitting next to me. I've also got a complete pair of 1.75" SU's in the back shed. You interested? You know you are. :hmm: mmm my mouth druels. me want me want Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 haha good old 5k torque monsters Quote
kangaroosa Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 mmm my mouth druels. me want me want Drop me a PM if you are seriously interested and we'll work out a price. Where are you from anyway? Quote
nhillau Posted December 1, 2005 Author Report Posted December 1, 2005 i don't know if this worked, but this is a pic of the engine in the rolla. Quote
Felix Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 nice. lots of future potential. heaps of performance L series bits floating around. i've seen a datto 1600 at the drags run a high 13 sec quarter, using a stroked L20 and 48's. Quote
Corolla_Kid Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) Needs sidedraughts :D Edited December 5, 2005 by Corolla_Kid Quote

charlie835egg Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 This topic is timely. I've just come into possesion of a L16 motor from my mates rustbucket Stanza (the front left tierod pulled out of the chassis). Its got the dog leg box too. (SWEET 2nd ->3rd changing) and it has 5 speeds ohhh ahhh! Nhillau can you please expand on the EASY slip in bit about the engine mounts and the gearbox mounts. Do you need to weld in datsun mounts? The gearbox cross member, does it need holes redrilling?? Is another hole need to be cut to pop up the shifter?? What did you do about the hydro clucth on box (looks at pic and notices dy clutch). And just checking, the tailshaft was the right length. No shortening? (crosses fingers.) I see you took the datsun throttle linkage. Sorry but it looks akward. Note your carby is chipped. Later Charlie835egg PS Do we "legally" need to blue plate this? Quote
Tiger Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Neat trick up in here... :P Yup... you guessed it... :) Quote
