My KE55 diff whines when you drive it, what does that mean, not enough oil?, wheel bearings f@$ked?, whats the easiest remedy, i heard people used to stick banana peel in there back in the old days to stop them from whining when they were trying to sell a car :jamie:

Cheers

They did that when they were selling cars, because it is a very temporary solution. And usually blows the diff up. Although my friend had one in his diff for years haha

I haven't had many shitters that didn't have a noisy diff, they don't seem to blow up though. You can try putting more oil in it, but usually once it's noisy, it's too late.

I would just drive on it, and have a spare at your house just in case

Over Fill the bitch, by a hole lot.

i mean, jack the back up as far as possible, pump as much truck diff oil into it, then jam the filler plug into it.

Lol does that fix it, or you just taking the piss?

Also would they knock it back for rego in NSW?

lol, it doesnt fix fix the problem; you can't physically fix worn teath with more oil :jamie: - but, it helps, and its excatly what i have done ~ more oil, more cooling area, less strain on moving parts, as far as what I'm told..

it appears to have done the job on mine so far.. hey, its still working :paw:

dodgiest thread ever

do not put sawdust or banana peel or mince in your diff

it whines because it is worn, either the teeth aren't meshing as they should, or parts have worn inside and it needs shimming, or the bearings are old, or all of the above. you're looking at about 4-600 bucks to have it professionally rebuilt, or you could just get another old diff from the wreckers for a hundred bucks or so

you can overfill with oil to quieten it down a bit, this is good for reliability around big sweeping corners too. you can also get oil additives like "lucas oil stabiliser" which are just a really thick oil that sticks to the gears and takes up a bit of the slack

works well in diffs, makes gearboxes a bit hard to shift when they're cold

Ah i see, KE3X and KE5X Diffs Are Interchangable arn't they?, I am yet to crawl under it to check the quality and amount of oil it currently has, (still getting spiders out of it :paw: ),

Thanks for that Jamie :jamie:

I have the very same problem with my diff in my 10, it whines like a bitch, especially at high speeds.

Once a diff whines, it just means that its worn and needs to be replaced, I'm on the look for another diff right now :jamie:

It doesnt do anything to the overall performance, it just pisses you off...

ke3x/5x diffs are interchangeable as whole unit

there are two different types of center, and the centers don't interchange between the two, nor do axles

there are two types of drum brake, which do interchange

The borg warner style diff is alot heavier and makes the car feel better on the road too.

I would just drive it, don't do burnouts on it, and I bet in another 10 years it's still running, and I also bet it's been whining like that for the last 10 years.

Standard diffs + supercharged K engines + stupid huge rev drop burnouts = bang

Or in my case.....which i found out about a year ago.
