G'day

Got a 4k corolla motor it hasn't been running in a while but now that I have it running I am still tuning it (I think it is running rich, has the odd miss here and there and has small back fires).

Anyway it has a little 'tick, tick, tick' noise going on.

I checked/set the tappets at warm, set them to what was recommended in the FAQ/Wiki section.

A mate reckoned his 4k always ticked yet that seems a little odd to me.

Any ideas what it may be?

Also I am having a little trouble getting it to run warm (I can hold my hand on the radiator hoses all day) would that be because it is running a bit rich?

Thanks.

Jackson.

Yeah, there is a thermostat and I have chucked it in some boiling water, opened up fine.

Well the fuel pump is out of a 3k (could that be a problem?) the fella that sold me the 4k said the fuel pump didn't work and had rigged up this little electric thing.

so its an electric pump?

or you put a 3k pump back on it?

its an old pushrod motor, they like to tick...

when does the backfiring occur?

The back firing is when you rev up to change gear then when you change gear it back fires. So I guess when you rev it hard then back off.

I put the 3k pump back on it.

okie, does it also backfire, or like pop and carry on on over run?

this may well be running lean infact.

what carby have you got on it?

Posted

mine ticks and backfires and blow's flames but you might actually have a problem i can't find my tick its only a small tick although i havn't been very concerend maybe timing chain

Mine ticks & it sounds like a tappet, but I've been over them quite a few times and its not a clearance problem. Maybe a chip off a rocker, or a valve, maybe fuel pump, maybe follower, maybe rocker shaft

maybe just a 4K...

Over-run backfires.. does it have a resonator under the passenger's seat?

Excuse my lack of knowledge but what is over run?

It just has the stock carby. We thought it might be to rich as there was a little smoke from the exhaust also when it is cold you can pump the accelerator and it doesn't pick up any revs, runs rough as guts, misses and farts about but once warm everything is fine, except for the tick.

Don't know what a resonator is. The motor is actually in a Suzuki Sierra so there isn't anything that would have been on the car body.

From memory the manifold gasket was fine.

like, when your slowing down, and leave the car in gear, like engine braking.

ye old 4k in the sierra trick...

have you done a full service, leads, points, dizzy cap, rotor button, plugs and timed the motor at the correct RPM?

cheers, andy

Hahaha, yeah that ole trick. Goes better then my brothers crappy sierra anyway, even with the ticking a going crazy.

Well yeah it does pop a lil when in over run, I figured that was some sort of miss, I was gunna get onto this stuff once it is registered which will be soon hopefully.

Has electric dizzy so no points, haven't done leads, last fella had new spark plugs in there, timed the motor to 8 deg with no advance at 'around correct' RPM, haven't done dizzy cap and just don't know what a rotor button is...

Thanks for the help so far fellas,

A resonator is the straight-through hot-dog muffler that sits in the exhaust pipe under the passenger's floor. They stop it popping on over-run.

Is the choke connected? If not, that is probably your cold running problem.

The rotor takes the power from the dizzy's central lead out to each plug lead as it spins. Its the security system that you remove when going to the movies and you've parked in a dodgy area. Usually its pretty trouble-free.

Rich means it runs cool, lean makes it run hot.

Sounds like it really needs a good going over, carb and electrics.
