andrew Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 thats the way teddy. and like you said it would be a good idea to get another motor and build it over time while you can get some good experince in the stocker. as building a hot motor for the first time is a great way to learn about engines and exactly how they work. i did my first build at 15-16 years old! Teddy Posted May 10, 2004 Author Report Posted May 10, 2004 "Yes, I'd agree as well, I'd suggest matt sticks with the 4K till he gets a better feel for how his car handles. Any Learner driver is potentially dangerous if driving inexperienced with so much power. Not to mention insurance for a Turbo/Supercharged car is so high.." i completly agree - i don't ever wanta fall into that situation, even tho sometimes my crazy ideas sound like it - atm I'm happy with my 4KC ! (Go the 4K ! :) ) can't wait to get a 4K or a 4AC and pull it apart, and rebuild it just to learn somting ! :D Quote
ae71neo Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 Yeah i am doing the suspension first but i do want something more powerful. I was going to just get a 100kw 4age, but i want a GZE. Just the attraction of forced induction. Would be hell quick to :) Quote
Teddy Posted May 10, 2004 Author Report Posted May 10, 2004 lol biggest sleaper on the northside - Poo Brown with a Gze heheheheh Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 building your own motor is one of the most fun and rewarding things you can ever do. even just basic mods like a 3k head (even a smallport) will make your car alot more fun to drive, without going over the top. as these cars are light, low down torque is a very rewarding experience :) super job, get some good suspension (shocks, springs, nolathane) going and get rid of that bodyroll, your car fill feel heaps quicker and you'll brake better too :D and don't worry, nobody's dreaming days are over, i still wish i had my twincarbs on, rear swaybar kit, decent front suspension, custom rear leaves, msd ignition, blah blah blah :D it never stops Quote
Teddy Posted May 11, 2004 Author Report Posted May 11, 2004 lol i know :) I'm doing research on suspension atm, i remember nick saying "theres bad suspension, average suspension, good suspension, better suspension, great suspension, Bloody exelent suspension, Insane suspension etc" - I'm assuming the more u pay the better u get... but with the top end stuff, do u just pay for the name? - any tips i should know when getting suspension? - any 1 know any good web pages with newbie info on suspension 4 australia? Thanks all :D "i still wish i had my twincarbs on, rear swaybar kit, decent front suspension, custom rear leaves, msd ignition..." heheheehhehe Cooolies :D :moon: ;) Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 now here's where you start asking yourself what you use your car for the most, and how it should be setup. for a basic clean street setup, get something like gas shocks (kyb, pedders) and aftermarket stiffer lower springs (kings, lovells, pedders) and you're set. things like gabriels and monroes are cheaper, but it's a case of you get what you pay for, i think a set of KYBs will last probably twice as long as a set of monroes. pedders are known for making fairly stiff suspension, i know the pedders "comfort" gas in my car are anything but comfortable, but they're definately good and hard :D for a serious race setup, you want to start looking at adjustable things, to suit different tracks and days and to fine tune based on how you drive. koni adjustable shocks, custom made springs. alot of people on the net have fitted different struts to their corollas at this point, for bigger brakes mostly, but that opens up a whole range of different suspension options too. finally, you can go all out and get coilovers like fook's made up, and adjust everything. that's the best, but that isn't cheap! you also find most people with coilovers dial them in to one good setting and use that, sometimes two i personally like a hard front end for steering response, and a softer-but-still-hard rear end to keep the power on the ground. i don't really care about bigger brakes because i am dangerous and irresponsible and i don't have to by law :) (eventually i will get them done, it's just cash). i've got custom 170lb springs and just some old monroe gas shocks for the front (because i'm a poorass and can't afford $135 a front shock KYBs), not in the car yet :D for the back, pedders gas shocks, i'll eventually rebuild the leaves with an extra leaf for stiffness, but you have coils so it's nice and easy :moon: Quote
andrew Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 remember i have my front sports struts i don't need!!!!! Quote
Teddy Posted May 11, 2004 Author Report Posted May 11, 2004 "remember i have my front sports struts i don't need!!!!! " - As in forsale? - Email me @ My ke70 account with more info andrew :D ! Car Use : Street for now, and I'm sure as time goes on ill do the motorkanas, Skid pans etc - but all street really. Price Range : I wouldnt wanta spend more that $800 Tops. - that ok? (why $800? - because at the end of next month ill have that much :) ) I can't rememebr were i got this from, isnt it possible to put the leaf springs from the station wagen onto my car, and wouldnt this improve the body role situaion slightly, or have i rememberd really wrong? thanks once again Supa Jamie for a Great Post :D :moon: Quote
demuire Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 Teddy: No you don't want to put leafs on your car, you can't really unless you modify your suspension mounting points anyway. $800 should get you at least some new shocks easy. With new springs as well you might have to look at doing it yourself. For your purposes I'd suggest just some low King springs and some KYB Gas shocks, I'd estimate the springs to be about $150 a pair, estimate shocks to be about $250 a pair. Those are fairly high estimates, they might be a little cheaper. Call around, you'll be surprised how much the prices vary. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 The shocks I bought for the front of nicks car were $150 for the set (Pedders), think you are pretty much on the ball there fook :) Quote
Teddy Posted May 11, 2004 Author Report Posted May 11, 2004 Sweet thanks guys ! do tyre places sell suspension or is there an outlet u guys all use? Quote
demuire Posted May 11, 2004 Report Posted May 11, 2004 Yes, tyre places usually sell them, but call around. For springs I find Ken Graham (Accurate Suspension) is a good source, he sometimes gets them cheaper than retail. For shocks I got mine from Anthony Kellam, again cheaper than anywhere else I could find. Quote
Super Jamie Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 i usually try and buy cool things second hand (like springs from rob's old rally car), but that all depends on the people you know and what cars they have for new stuff, i have a mechanic mate who gets me stuff at trade price. anything he can't get, retail from supercheap / repco / aussie auto Quote
MD0086 Posted May 20, 2004 Report Posted May 20, 2004 All this information is invaluable especially for me as i am in the same situation :) Just a thought i have lined up a 12a mild port what are your opinions of this conversion into a ke55?? i have made an estimate of $7K with everything engineered, etc. This includes all suspsnsion work, everything what do youi guys think?/ Michael Quote
