Just before I get into a blazing row with my wife, I thought I'd try and find out just what the law states about P platers and modified cars in NSW.

What can you do to a car and what can't you do??

Is there a Govt list somewhere that clearly lays it out, like it bans turbos. Non-standard exhaust? Change of cam profile? Increase in engine capacity? +20thou? +40thou?? 75mm to 80mm??

vic roads book say you can only lower a car 1/3 of the orginal bumpstop height.

or 100mm off the lowest part of the chassis. not brakes/suspension. I'm not sure about the exhaust?

"can you hang around evan while i take your rocket cover off and check your cam duration and lift?"

what they can't see they don't no

That one's not a problem-

But this is a bit all-encompassing..

Any modification designed to increase performance

Its a good thing the mods I did were to decrease fuel usage...

I'll keep hunting through RTA shit...

I gave the red rocket to my sister as her first car. It is lowered 2inches, 15in alloys from 13's, 2in exaust with 4in japcan and custom grill. She's been in it since February and hasn't had a problem. But this is Queensland. I think the focus is on xr6 turbos with P plates etc. Cosmetic mods aren't really life threatening are they? :hmm:

I know... Good intentions by Govts always crucify ordinary people!

What I found is-

From the RTA... basically you can't drive a V8, a turbo, or supercharged car, a car from a list that only Asians could afford, or vehicles modified for performance-

""You must not drive any vehicle with:

*

Eight or more cylinders (except Diesel).

*

A turbocharged or supercharged engine (diesel powered engines exempt).

*

Modifications that increase engine performance.""

So it is lucky I did those modifications to decrease fuel usage and lower our CO2 footprint, not to increase performance.

However, the next bit says-

Any other vehicle identified by the RTA – further details available on the RTA website.

and amongst the list of fine cars that you can't drive,

BMW M and M3.

*

Honda NSX.

*

Nissan 350Z and 370Z (including private or 'grey' import variants eg. Infiniti G35, Infiniti G37, Skyline 350GT (V35), Skyline 370GT (V36)).

*

All Porsches from 1994 models onwards (except diesel).

*

Mercedes Benz SLK350.

is a line that says-

pdf Application for exemption

ooooohh... interesting! Part of the exemptions from the banned or modified vehicles is a line that says-

6. I need to drive a prohibited vehicle that may be determined by the RTA to be of moderte power

Bahaha!!! What cars can you drive that make more power than the Mighty 4K... damm near every other one on the road!

So she can always apply for an exemption if it is a problem! ""The modifications were necessary to give almost moderate power and try to keep up with the traffic.""

LoL!

I'd be jealous of any P plater that gets to drive any of the cars on that list (I think I'd be a completely different person today if my first car was an NSX not a KE35...)... hell... I'm off my Ps and I still don't get to drive those cars!

Yeah NSX are awesome piece of machine, but other than "daddy not here" who will ever drive one of them,

Hard enough trying to see one on the road

Back when I was on my L's I drove a 383 stroker. Never had any issues, although people seemed to stay out of my way :hmm: :P

Was a bit dull when I went to a 1.5L econobox on my p's!

Then I got a KE70, never really had rta/5-0 trouble with that either. I mean come on its just an old corolla. Got the odd look at the wide wheels though lol, and asked what was in it (just a lumpy cam mate... :fuzz: )

So technically most mods could be deemed illegal, but if you arent being a dick you don't get picked on anyway
