Hey guys this is my first post on this site I'm currently doing some work to my girlfriends 1980 ke55 corolla. It's running a dirty old 4k-c with a 5 speed manual behind it. I'll be doing a bit of work to it soon like painting redoing the interior and the reason I'm in this section I'm changing the engine. I plan to put in a 2tg which I am yet to source.

The main question I can't find an answer for is will my box fit up to a 2tg?

I know the 2tg fits a t50 but I'm unsure on what kind of box is in at the moment.

The main reason for asking the question is my box is still in good nick and I'm not really to keen on fitting a hydraulic clutch up at the moment.

Also if there's anybody that reads this and has done this conversion before are there any tips or tricks you can share to save me any major pains in the behind?

I'm located in ACT and if there is anybody around here with a 2tg ke55 I could have a quick look over it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Peter

I would seriously suggest you look at a 4AGE rather than a 2TG. Similar work required, but 4AGE's are far more available, as are parts. Can still carb it if you like which makes the conversion a lot easier.

In my view, 2TG's are for those with a particular interest and who are prepared to search high and low for parts.

Have a look in the build threads. There will be a few 4AGE KE55's there I'm sure.

If you wanted a carby'd 4a you could always go a 4AC. Would be easier/cheaper to get your hands on, wouldn't have to worry about converting an efi engine to carbys, though it still uses the T50 box.

You could always try to source a 5k (or 7k if you are feeling like something a little different), they aren'y extremely easy to find, but there are still some floating around.

pfft piss easy ring toyo spares but epect to pay for it i kno its 1200 for a 7k without the injection

if u want the injection gear add on 650 more if it was me id be going a 7ke plenty of power and economy

and if the popo didnt look too had could get away without a mod plate

but id be trying to get a k to t cable bellhousing and run a t50

Is the T50 really needed? I drove my 7k KE55 for 3-4 years with a k50 and never had any problems (still has the k50, though I just don't drive it anymore).

Yeh I'm not going to go to a 5k cause I don't wanna spend money for an extra 100cc. And I'm staying away from injection for now.

So what I'm understanding from the replies is the box in mine at the moment is a k50 which is a weaker version of a t50?

closer to 200cc extra.. Your k50 gearbox will only fit a K engine as the bellhousing is cast onto the gearbox body.

T50s come with bolt-on bellhousings , type depending on what engine series they are to be used on and age. (K to T, T to T, A to T, Ag to T and so on)

Lots more info to be found in faq . Oh, and yes T50s are stronger than K50s and very different

So you will have to use a t50 if going 2TG or 4AG, so you will have to convert to a hydraulic clutch.

Not real difficult, just a bit time consuming. Have to take out the pedal box to modify it. There might be some bolt holes already on the firewall to mount the clutch master cylinder (is on the ke30/ke35, not sure for the ke55). Need to drill a hole in the firewall with a hole saw. A ta22 celica clutch master cylinder or something similar can be used.

In my experience fitting a 2tg would be far simpler than fitting a 4age. when i fit 2tg's to ke30/55 the gearstick comes through the original hole in the tunnel and the original drive shaft can be retained. the hardest part of the conversion is indeed the hydraulic clutch setup and that is not to difficult, if you or someone you know has a little skill with a drill and a welder. any questions about doing this conversion just pm me.

like i love 4ages don't get me wrong but if ur goin to go to all that effort go efi

but 2tgs are just cool no frigging around to convert to carb and if u want to later on u can get the efi gear for them.

and well theres someone on here in a gold ke30-55 not sure with a 7k with twin sideys and he destroys k50s non stop thats why i said go t50 or even w series do it once do it rite.

Hey, I was looking at doing the 2T as well, there was a guy selling a 2T that he'd started building for a rally car then decided on a rotary instead. He was selling it on allclassifieds if your interested. It was actually reasonably cheap, might have needed to source your own carbs, from memory the one he was offering with it was pretty rubbish. The guy wanted just north of a grand for it, and included the forged pistons and other gear he had bought for it. Pretty sure it had a new crankshaft, the pistons, had been honed, etc etc etc.

Check out allclassifieds, may still be up there
