Okay so I've taken the head off the 4k to change a few things, taken extractors and carbie plus manifold off and all back on now, problem is now when I go to start it it turns over but pops really loud, from the carbie I think and extractors back firing kind of but won't start?! Now I did take the diZzy off so it's not in original spot so obviously timing would be a bit out but still thought it would at least start. Any ideas what would be causing it to pop loudly like this and not start? Started up fine last time I took the head off. Any help would b great, cheers!

backfiring out the intake is your ignition timing out.

double check the position of the distributor.

it will probably start if its +/- 20deg or so, but any more and you will get what you are experiencing.

trying rotating the dizzy (where it is now), see if it gets better or worse, maybe you are close...maybe you are a tooth out.

First take of the tappet cover or take out number one spark plug and find out when #1 is firing.

Then check your points against that. make sure you are correct in your assumption of which way the dizzy is turning, as you need the points just opening at TDC.

Then make sure the rotor points to #1 cyl.

Don't panic!

yea i was thinking it would be something to do with the dizzy. The spark plugs are in the right order but the dizzy may be a tooth out which makes sense. i thought the dizzy could only fit in one way tho and turn from there? the dizzy wouldnt be 180degrees out would it otherwise it would be round the other way yea? i had turned the crank so the pistons were all in line to slip the dizzy back in, this is probs what has thrown everything out I'm assuming now.. where do i go from here to get the timing closeish to at least start it? take the dizzy out and start again?

Check it all... make sure you have number one firing, as one and four share that timing mark on the crank pulley and you don't want to confuse them... Make sure you know which way it turns.

Then when you know #1 is at TDC firing, look at where the rotor is and the points cam. If it is a bit out, just pull the dizzy up and rotate it a bit.

The thing to watch is how the rotor turns as you push the dizzy back in, so although you've lined it up when its out it rotates away as it goes in.

hey guys just a question. bit of a noob question and don't mean to hijack, buuut, if the timing cog is one tooth out how do i go about fixing this? I'm not a complete idiot, i rebuilt my motor, but do i just undo the tensioner and literally rotate cog one tooth?

I doubt it! You'll have to pop the cam gear off the cam and rotate it a tooth.

A shit job Rainwarrior... What makes you think the cam is a tooth out?

I hope you have bolts through the front of the sump and not those studs, I know dropping the sump again would kill me! ..and I hate going back inside a motor that I've just put together so cleanly and carefully because I know the repair will be a bodge and get dirt everywhere.

Or do you mean the gear on the dizzy Alec? If so you need to pull the dizzy out, use a long screw driver to turn the oil pump just a little bit, then put the dizzy back in. Boom.

The dizzy can go in anyway, as long as the oil pump thingo is right and vac advance unit don't get in the way.

Pull the dizzy out, rotate the rotor 180 degrees, slot back in.

Will definately loudly backfire if dizzy is 180 degrees out.

to adjust the cam timing.

undo the tensioner/guide and the bolt securing the cam.

take the bolt out and drop the cam sproket, when the chain has enough slack in move it a tooth on the crank.

ill take a video if you want?
