Millaz88 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Ok first question How do you guys do the oil pressure upgrade I have read that you put a 2mm washer in the oil pump but where? Ok second thing I have a rattle and squeak over about 70ks coming from my diff only started in the last week seams to be coming from the front of the diff and there is a touch of play in the front bearing is it possible to replace it at home or just look for another diff? I need to get a new diff anyways as it's 4:30 and I want 4:11 but it's annoying on the way to work Thanks guys Miller Quote
Millaz88 Posted June 5, 2011 Author Report Posted June 5, 2011 Lol if only I could afford that mate that's my dream but only a dream at the moment Quote
love ke70 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 you could probably do pinion bearings yourself, but usually by this age they need more than that where are you located? i could have a diff for you, in yatala. and i remember reading, a 2mm washer under the oil pressure relief valve spring, essentially increasing the pressure required to push the valve open. Millaz88 Posted June 5, 2011 Author Report Posted June 5, 2011 I'm in werribee mate I have a spare 4k in the shed I will have a play with making it hold more pressure thanks mate Quote
_FNQ_rolla_ Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 How do you guys do the oil pressure upgrade I have read that you put a 2mm washer in the oil pump but where? Thanks guys Miller Hey there, I do not know what motor you want to up the oil pressure on but on a 4AG motor all you have to do is put a 2mm spacer under the part circled in red (that is between the part in red and the C-clip) or you could just do what i did and tirn that little part up in the lathe making it 2mm thicker. Hope that helps you out, All the best Quote
Millaz88 Posted June 5, 2011 Author Report Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) Sorry mate shoulda been more specific it's for a 4kc Thanks for the info tho mate Edited June 6, 2011 by philbey Quote
Evan G Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Stock oil pressure usually sits around 20psi at idle, going up to 60psi during operation. Increasing the oil pressure is good for high-rpm reliability, as it keeps the bearing surfaces lubricated better. It places a small drag on the motor, probably a fraction of a horsepower, more than worth it for engine longevity. To increase the oil pressure, remove the split pin on the oil pump relief and insert a shim (like a washer) into the sprung cup that comes out, usually something of thickness ~3mm will do it. This also gets your oil pressure up more quickly at idle, important because most of the wear on an engine happens when it's warming up. its a sump off job, do it if you have to do a sump gasket or the engine out. love ke70 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 excess oil pressure results in increased (greatly!) surface temperatures on the bearing surface. Quote
_FNQ_rolla_ Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 You never said why you want more oil pressure? Quote
Millaz88 Posted June 5, 2011 Author Report Posted June 5, 2011 The reason I want more oil pressure because I have a plan to build the spare engine I have in the shed maybe get the crank balanced and rods balanced for some high revs and fit some zx10 bike carbs and put it into my daily instead of the planed engine swap I had in mind as my budget has dropped by a lot I was planing on running an oil cooler also and tuned exhaust But yeh all just plans and ideas in my head at the moment Quote
ke70dave Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 still doesnt explain why you want higher oil pressure. Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) I did the oil pressure upgrade when i rebuilt my motor, but i had a massive cam, oversized pistons blah blah. I did it on the belief that any internal work done to the motor would benefit in a high rate of oil circulation. But my oil pressure sits at like 65psi on idle! is this not good? sorry, don't mean to hijack, i'll have a look through my piccies Millaz and see if i can spot the one i took of the oil pump apart. Should show you exactly what you need to do  EDIT: Hey mate, couldn't find my own pics, but i pulled this from a blog of a fella building a rev happy 4k in KE20, same engine, same principle. blog here BLOGGITY BLOG BLOG shim pic here CLICKY CLICKY To the left of the split pin are two washes, i put one 3mm 6mm ID washer instead of 2 1.5mm. I put it on the inside of the spring retainer (3rd from the right has the wear on it fromm the pin), then bolted it all up together. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, just knocked off work  Edited June 5, 2011 by RainWarriorDregs Quote
love ke70 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 65 at idle hot or cold? if hot, I'm concerned, whats it go up to at revs? for reference, my 4.2 diesel, which I'm very protective of, when hot at highway speed, 2500rpm, can run 32-34 psi, which doesnt bother me, i actually went down to this thinner oil... cheers, andy Quote
