Just wondering if anyone else on here has remover the engine and box from an AE82 and if there were any specific issues that a Gregory's/Service Manual doesn't cover? And also if the gearbox is a C or T50 in the Twin Cam badged models?

The box is coming out due to the synchromesh for 1st to 2nd is rooted by previous owners and I want it replaced before I get my license back in a few weeks. Will hopefully have her cleaned up and maybe get a thread going somewhere for an actually Rolla on this forum :P

Cheers guys

Chris

probably a C52 box.

Problem is the engine mounts are not on the engine but the gearbox, so you need to support the weight of the engine as you take the box out. You need a decent amount of mechanical compatence to do this job

Are you saying that the box can be removed without removing the whole engine?

Do you have any hard info about the code for the box? Just coz I havent heard of a C52 box before :S

Unless the 'box has been changed/upgraded by a previous owner your box should be a C50 gear box.

You can leave the motor in to remove the 'box but it will need to be supported from above (as Sam Q said) as the lower engine mounts are actually bolted to the 'box. Once the motor is supported from above it's easiest to remove the crossmember with it's mounts which will give you greater access from underneath. Don't forget to remove all of your thermostat housing assembly from the box before removal.

well said matt, one crude trick you can do is jack up the engine a bit, put a wooden board between your strut towers, wrap a chain over the board onto the engine hooks and let it go, this will then support the engine weight and free up your jack for lifting the box out.

I've used ropes in a purchase system running off my strut braces for this before  Yes crude, but effective. Had a jackstand with a thick block of wood on top of it supporting the engine from underneath as well. :)

+1 for remembering to disconnect your thermostat housing etc from the box before removal! :y:

I also recommend an assistant to help putting it back in, they've got a bit of weight to them, its offset to one side & getting it in by yourself involves a lot of grunting & swearing, not sure which it's more of :laff:
