for no real quantitatve reason i have always been a penrite fan.

Completely agree :P

I spent a couple hundred on a 20lt drum of Penrite oil for the Toyoglide and use Penrite Sin coolant... no idea why really

hehe.

the thing is. noone on here (that i can tell) has any quantitative evidence to suggest which oil is better than any other.

only evidence is how the engine sounds and feels. which is compeltely subjective to the user.

what is more important than which oil, is how often it is changed.

keep oil changes regular and the weight of the oil in the ballpark of where its supposed to be (mineral oil, HPR30ish) and you wont have any problems.

I use Penrite 20 - 50 or 30 - 50 can't remember the last one i threw in...

but yes I agree i'll be sticking with it, the container just makes it look legit, magnatec's container makes it look cheap and unlegit.

people running really thick oils, like 30w70, i hope you like sludgy motors, cause thats what its gonna cause.

also, excessively thick oil increases oil pressure in your big ends and mains, this elevated pressure can have a hugeee effect on surface temperatures of the bearings, and in my book i would avoid that, and run the thinner oil, 20w50 is still thick.

i don't even run oil that thick in my 15 year old 300K diesel, not a big fan of penrite as they try to push thicker than recommended oils, which cause sludging, i use shell in my diesel, and at the moment my 3t has the old oil out of my diesel in it, but for a motor i care about i would be looking at shell or castrol, theres alot of info on oils if you care to read it all, all the codes that say it complies with this and that, if you read them you will find alot of things interesting, the reason i use shell in mine is cause it meets a certain aus standard, but not other international ones cause it has such a high content of some really good lubricating stuff, banned overseas cause its not the best for the environment...

twinky, are you saying the oil drains out of the head while the motors running, or after shutdown?

I dislike Penrite oils. I've used Penrite in my AU2 once and i noticed more valve train rattle on start up. I also used Penrite gear oil in my T5 and its hard to select 1st and 2nd when cold.

Castrol wins hands down for me.

10w40 in my AU2 and the new 5K will be getting the same.

penrite ftw. only ever use the hpr30 (20w60) in my "k" series, suggest hpr10 or a 15w in the "a" series depending on kms. used to use the 20w50's and it only come out black and burnt. higher temp makes a massive difference.

also a note. the way oil is graded the 15w40's are closer to 20w50 in cheaper brands, this is due to the 15w40 being the thinnest viscosity allowed for that grade. cheaper the brand the more variability in the range. regulations have tightened this up but still grey at best.

just a note tho...

in my stock 4k spare engine for my khanacross car it runs 0-40castrol or 5-30 in my new supercharged one will be maybe a 20 weight otherwise no thicker than 30 just what i run :)

I have been told that the oil does not stay as long in the head during operation if you run too thin of an oil.

Although these were V8's that he was mentioning I would say that the same principals apply. I have noticed less

engine noise when cold after using Penrite 30-70 so I guess it's up to whatever works best for each individual.

I haven't had any sludge in my motor when I pulled it apart.

it comes up the pushrods and splashes around theres heaps up there actually if its thinner more would get thereeven in truck engines like 15L massive we run 15/40 so i don't understand thick oil unless the motor is completely warn out

I'm with mitch

and also des about penrite gear oil being shit. like absolute complete and utter shit.

i used penrite gearbox oil in my trol for 3 changes, and everytime shift quality was absolute shit, especially first and second. remember patrol gearboxes are huge f@$kers, make criuser boxes look like toys.

it was so poor i asked the people and they suggested a nulon G70 i think gearbox additive, and made it no better.

got the shits and decided to try some of the good old no fuss VMX80, in its plain white bottle with just a little sticker, no fancy pants shit, the change was instant, havnt gone back to penrite since, and it really set my mind.

also, now use castrol coolant, which seems to be quite good stuff :)

Actually I'll try the castrol again but not the magnatec, just for comparisons sake.

Good point mitch, although thicker oil would stay up longer it also takes longer to get up.

I'll do an oil flush and change over to costrol and see if I do notice any differences, otherwise back to penrite!

I actually use VMX80 for my gearbox aswell, never had any problems with it and it is quite cheap aswell.

i agree with the comment about penrite trying to push higher viscosity ratings...with their "extra 10" crap. i steer clear of that. just get the normal rated stuff.

i remember when i was working at supercheap auto quite a number of yrs ago, they had some promotion on a castrol magnetic oil i think it was (where the stores were competing to try and sell the most...), they pretty much told us to sell it to everyone that wanted oil for their car, regardless of the type of car.... (old or new....)

i still sold the correct weighted oil to the customers i dealt with (well as per the small amount of info we had from the oil companies), then got asked why i wasn't selling them this stuff on promotion.....

so a ke70dave top tip, don't take what super cheap auto workers say as gospel!
