Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Was wondering what the best model corolla is to slide. I'm not wanting to compete or really even track the car, just want something to have a bit of a slide in. Can't be boosted due to Vic P Plate laws. What model should i be looking at and what mods are necessary to get them sliding (apart from the obvious manual, locked diff, etc). I apologise if this has been previously discussed (i would assume it has) but i am new to the site and can't find anything. Any help/comments will be much appreciated :) Cheers.
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Pretty much none. P plate mods are there to stop you being able to. Learn to go around corners properly then slide when you can modify your car.
_FNQ_rolla_ Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 ^^^ I agree, learn to drive on the road. If you want to “Slide” then take yourself of to a controlled environment, i.e. a track
Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 Oh ok. What exactly do you mean when you say 'learn to go around corners properly'?
bAKER Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) If you just hit your Ps, you don't know how to drive yet. You NEED more experience first, have your first crash first, at least (everyone does). Learn how to "drive aggressively" in a paddock (don't need power at all) or on a track, in ideal conditions, with the least amount of risk, to you and your car. Edit: an AE86 with a 4age in will be ok :y: legal engine swap too. Edited April 20, 2011 by bAKER
Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 I've been on my Ps for 2 years, and know that doesn't give me a world of experience. But I had an old corona as a paddock basher for a few years before getting my license, have nearly written off my ba xr6 (not proud of it but as you said it does happen) and i'm not going to go driving like a dick past primary schools and up main streets. I don't see the point of waiting till i'm on my open license and jumping in a modded car if i can start in a less powerful car now. I play around in my ba but its a bit of a boat and i don't want to go touching gutters or anything in it, if you get where I'm coming from? thanks for the help :)
ae824ate Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Agreed with all above. Read my topic about how i feel about P platers that think they are drift heros. YOU'RE NOT! And its kids that think they are that kill people (my best mate a few years ago), or themselves. If you want it on the street, don't bother. If its an off the road car, go for your life man! Learn how to control it sideways, test its cornering limits, learn to judge corners, abuse the f@$k out of it! just don't do it on the bloody road!
BReNt Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 ke70, cut springs, locked diff, rainy day. LOL
Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 By no means do i think that i'm a drift hero or even an experienced driver for that matter. But none the less point taken, and sorry about your mate. Thanks
Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 ke70, cut springs, locked diff, rainy day. LOL This is actually more along the lines of what i expected to hear haha But thanks for all the comments :)
towe001 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) 'What exactly do you mean when you say 'learn to go around corners properly'? Google the sentence "Apex of a corner". Would be one step closer. "Cornering dynamics" is another. By the way, chopped springs and a locked diff is also a good way of losing the car as well as your licence. Have a nice day :) Edit - fixed last nights phone attempt Edited April 20, 2011 by towe001
B.L.Z.BUB Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 ke70, cut springs, locked diff, rainy day. LOL P plates, instant defect. 1
Scar92 Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 Google it? c'mon mate. Cuts sprigs and a locked diff is definitely defectable, but in Vic the highway patrol will stick a canary on the window of an untouched car if they are in the right mood. They hound little things like tint, parker lights, width of wheels. My point is if they wanted to defect an old rolla down here it wouldn't have to have cut springs and a locked diff. Cheers for the input though :)
towe001 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Google it? c'mon mate. Well, whats better A super stiff suspension setup that has no body roll ? Or a stiff suspension setup that keeps some body roll ? Which one will go around corners better and faster ?
ke70dave Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) any corolla is quite capable of sliding itself into a tree. best corolla to slide? they are all RWD (well up untill ae82), all light, and all underpowered and gutless. unfortunately you can't do much about the underpowered and gutless department until you get off your p plates. if you want to slide on your p's, i suggest an SR20de s13. they are so cheap now, seen a few for under 5k! set of coilovers, sway bars, some good tyres a few adj arms to get a good alignment. get yourself onto a track and have a ball. you will never get the same out of any corolla without an engine conversion and Alot of cash spent on suspension. to be honest, unless you are hellbent on getting a corolla, weather it be for looks, or the oldschoolness (which are both valid reasons), then grab a nissan for easy fun sideways action.
