TOM Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) Picking this up from an uncle on the weekend, can't wait! I just couldn't pass it up - especially given I'm paying almost nothing for it. The car hasn't been registered for 4 or 5 years but has been in regular use carting wood around the block, and I'm hoping to drive it home (from the Barossa - usually 1 hour but will take at least hour and a half in this thing) on the weekend after a service and check-over. Gotta love SA rego laws  just hope the clutch holds out - apparently it slipped with the last load of wood (although uncle reckons he had a 1 1/2 tons of wood on it!!!) It's got the trusty 12R with column 4 speed manual, and check out the custom high-sided tray! It's huge!!! :lolcry: Odomoter reads just over 1,000kms which is super cool, and it's only been around once - local owners since new and has a known history in the Barossa. Body is quite straight but has rust in the usual places, although it's certainly better than I remembered in most regards. Black vinyl nterior is amazingly clean for it's age and from memory the dash isn't cracked! Plans? Dunno yet...probably historic rego and use it whilst fixing the rust as I go! Will probably be kept standard (or period) looking though...no mini-truckin' here lads These are all the pics I have for now...she needs a good scrubbin' :laff: Driver window is still there...just stuck down! 7shades Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 I think I have NOS front and side blinker lenses for one of these... Quote
_FNQ_rolla_ Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 That little HiLux brings back some memory’s :y: I had one of them about 20 years back Quote
7shades Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 That little HiLux brings back some memory’s :y: I had one of them about 20 years back We had one too... Brand new :P Family owned a quarry at the time so it was bright 'do not run over with 75 tonne loader' yellow. :D Quote
Chobis Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Niiiiiiice! That thing would smash the Stout in the slowest 1/4 Mille drag race of all time. Even with the slipping clutch. Would love to see an original styleside tub on it. Quote
TOM Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 I think I have NOS front and side blinker lenses for one of these... I'll be in otuch Shady - might grab them if you don't want them... Niiiiiiice! That thing would smash the Stout in the slowest 1/4 Mille drag race of all time. Even with the slipping clutch. Would love to see an original styleside tub on it. Haha thanks Brenton, I've never driven one of these so I'm yet to discover how slow it is... Should be ok - apparently will sit on 100kph quite comfortably, and if it can haul over a ton of wood it can't be all that bad! And yeah the stylside tub would have been infinitely preferable, but the alloy tray is in really good nick and finding a good styleside would be...difficult. Already have what I believe are a set of original hubcaps to go on, and also a pair of huge spring-loaded chrome fender mirrors which actually came off one of these in the first place (found the mirrors at the same place as the Stout in my av...you know where) Quote
TOM Posted April 30, 2011 Author Report Posted April 30, 2011 Didn't end up picking this up yet due to crashing my work car on the day before Easter Friday (see update on my KE38 for a pic!), so this has been put on the backburner for a few weeks at least. Can't wait though! Quote
TOM Posted July 28, 2011 Author Report Posted July 28, 2011 OK so I'm starting a weeks holidays tomorrow, and first job for the week is to finally go and pick this up. Can't friggin wait! Had a stroke of luck recently when I found a complete white RN25 at U-Pull-It, recovered two rust-free doors with no mirror-holes and a heap of trim bits from it which was awesome. Plan is to give it a quick service, register online and then take it camping for the weekend to assess it's worthiness for the trip back to Adelaide (camping location is only 10 minutes from where I'm picking it up) - it should be ok but I'm a bit suspect about the clutch and a few other little things. A few loads of firewood should give me a fair idea of whether it will make it. Pics of said adventures to come... Does anyone happen to have points gap and/or timing specs for a 12-R? Quote
TOM Posted July 31, 2011 Author Report Posted July 31, 2011 Success! For the measely sum of $100, I now own this rusty, spider (and ant) infested Hulux. It has passed a weekend of testing with flying colours - did about 50k's including 2 loads of wood around the block and some drunken night-time cruising around the property, and it should be ok to drive home from the Barossa after a few jobs later this week. Clutch is slipping but will get me home, rest of the driveline works beatifully and the 12-R is smooth and gutsy. I have some general servicing and cleaning to so, some lighting problems to fix and a de-laminating retread on the front which needs addressing, and the spiders, then it's good to go. Interior is amazing considering the rest of it...no cracks in the dash, but I forgot to take pics Happy new owner after loading wood and getting up a hill without the clutch slipping, thinking "One more load and I've pretty much got my money's worth already" With tray = farm Without tray = win Hilux country... Tempting to leave the moss on there for patina :laff: Original 1978 dealer sticker from the same town I bought the car from...how the hell this survived has me buggered... 4 lads, 4 Toyota's, 3 bikes, way too much liquor, excessive meat consumption and a new Hilux to admire and tinker with = a frickin great weekend. Happy days Quote
TOM Posted August 4, 2011 Author Report Posted August 4, 2011 Spent a day servicing and scrubbing with some good results... It's now loaded and ready for driving home. Mate had some hupcaps he picked up for $10 at a swap meet - they look the part even if they're not original ones Crash pad is minty! Also threw in a parcel tray which I picked up from the wreckers, and my steering wheel off the 38 Hood lining is excellent Seat is very good with only a few small holes And a random shot taken from the kitchen window Quote
TOM Posted August 7, 2011 Author Report Posted August 7, 2011 Success! The old Hilux made it home yesterday from the Barossa Valley to Adelaide with no dramas, we even hit 100kp/h a couple times!!! Radiator cap was only half sitting on to prevent pressurisation, the clutch was protesting at any hint of an incline and we didn't have all lights operational, but it was sweet as and a heap of fun! The car drives so tight and amazed me with how (relatively) comfortable and cruisable it is. Was pissing down with rain here most of the day, so despite my best intentions to get stuck into it we basically just removed the farmers grille then pondered at the possibilities for this little truck whilst consuming many bottles of "thinking juice"... Loving this thing so much....ohhh the potential... Oh yeah...it now has a name... HILDA the HILUX. Mates Crown in this shot has a 308...it's very cool We all took turns at taking it around the block to experience the awesomeness... Quote
TOM Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 There have been some developments for this in the last couple weeks... Found a tub! It's an ex-Telecom one which is in pretty good order and a deposit has been paid. Have started cleaning it out and removing bolts etc but I know the wrecker pretty well and it's not going anywhere. Got some holidays this week so spent the day removing engine / gearbox, alloy tray and some of the interior. Tub as found at the wreckers...was saved by being propped up by a 40-gallon drum for 20 years - rust is minimal!! Stainless steel "Tonal" muffler - no wonder it sounds so good haha!! Quote
Redwarf Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 I hereby approve this product or event. :jamie: I love these old things that have just trundled through life, and will continue trundling for the next 40 years with little or no fuss. Old School Cool. 1 Quote
