pipster11 Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 hey guys i just bought an ae93 gti and it needs a new clutch, just wondering if anyone can machine the flywheel for me when it comes out? or do you know anyone who can do it cheap? thanks, Tom Quote
ke70dave Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 may want to include your location.. just take it to your local machinist, around 50bucks usually. i sure wouldn't be trusting a random forum member to machine my flywheel, but hey up to you! Quote
pipster11 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Report Posted April 25, 2011 launceston i've got a mate who can lathe and i can borrow uni's lathe but its a bit of hassle getting both organised (plus my mate is in melbourne atm too) merv grey wants about $65 to machine it which i think is pretty steep for 10 mins max setup and 5 mins of machine work Quote
Des Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 $65 is rather steep. NPC charged me $25 to machine my falcon flywheel but there is probably more machine shops around in brisbane than in TAS so more competition. Quote
Evan G Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 they don't use lathe to machine flywheels! Quote
Trev Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) Evan there is nothing wrong with lathe machining a flywheel, there is a myth that you have to have a circular motion or they won't work, wonder why brakes work then, road and track does lathe machining and there was never a problem. P.S. stop watching those f@$king videos. Edited April 25, 2011 by Trev Quote
KE20rollabus Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 lathes arent the best for machining flywheels, they wont remove hard spots cleanly, it takes more than 5 mins to machine one aswell. best to surface grind them Quote
Taz_Rx Posted April 27, 2011 Report Posted April 27, 2011 try getting a price from NBC Engineering in Kings Meadows. Quote
philbey Posted April 27, 2011 Report Posted April 27, 2011 Fly cutting them (Evans video) is probaly the neatest way to do it though. avoids tool chatter and would give you the most consistent finish? Quote
ecko Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 the going rate in hobart is $50 and thats trade, cheapest is around $40 so $65 may seem a whole $15 more but its not really anything excessive Quote
