ke70dave Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 sounds like you need a relay in your starter solenoid. have a search around, been covered a bit. basically you need to wire a relay into your starter solenoid wire, as there is too much voltage drop through the 30yr old wires running around your car. ke70dave Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 well yo need to start with the diagnosis.... make sure your battery is good, or put a known good one in. then if it still wont go, you need to look into the wiring. you can use a peice of wire straight from the battery to the starter motor solenoid. if that works then you know its a wiring issue. corollaart Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Could also be the 30 year old ignition switch, but sounds more like your soliniod on the starter.Tryed shorting across the terminals see if turns over. Broken wire??and yes a relay on the starter works very well, more so if your battery is in the boot. rob Quote
Trev Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Starter motor is stuffed, if the solenoid is clicking and there is no rotation, common sign of a dead starter. A relay is a band aid fix for a dying starter, the older they get the more voltage they require and if wiring was failing because it was old then everything in your car would be failing. Quote
towe001 Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Starter motor is stuffed, if the solenoid is clicking and there is no rotation, common sign of a dead starter. Sounds better. But also the solenoid needs way less amps to switch on then what it takes for the starter to even think about winding over. Quote
philbey Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 give the solenoid a tap with a hammer and see if it kicks. Either way, replace the starter. Quote
