SkidzMgee Posted March 15, 2011 Report Posted March 15, 2011 Hey guys, I'm finally jumping over to the Rolla side of the car enthusiast fence... FINALLY!!! :) I'm am due to purchase a Red 1986 AE82 Twin Cam Hatch, 4A-GE equipped and just about overrated, with only the engine bay needed a bit of a freshen up. I was wondering if there are any common problems, or things I should be wary of for that model that I can fix before June 30 and I'm back on the road? Cheers guys. Quote
carbonboy Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Compression test the motor! Rust common around windshield & hatch glass, inside spare wheel tub, along the roof channel above the doors (paint often cracks here) & in front of rear wheel arches. Driveshaft seals can be leaky but I put this down to overzealous people putting things back together & not being careful. Distributor can leak oil due to seals not being changed. (not really that difficult to do just rarely done) Its red :P Check CV's/clutch are okay as we AE82 owners tend to abu...*ahem* use these enthusiastically. Series 1 & Series 2 have different front bumpers (S2 the indicators are further apart). Centre consoles with the little compartment underneath the radio can be tough to find in good condition. Nothing too major off the top of my head I hope! Quote

The plastic cover above the dash/gauge cluster is pretty common with breaking. Is it a twinky ? Basically its the cx-r with a disc brake rearend. Quote
SkidzMgee Posted March 23, 2011 Author Report Posted March 23, 2011 What's a twinky? Thanks for the suggestions, Ill remember to write all that down next time I go round for a looksy. It's getting the gearbox refreshed before I take the car and has been a garage project for the last 2 years or so by my uncle and a friend of his. Body wise and interior wise, I think it's fairly top notch. I will take photos next time I'm around there. Thnaks again fellas Quote
LukeAE71 Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Ae82's Twin cams are often referred to as Twinkys Quote

carbonboy Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 What's a twinky? A Twinky is (from my understanding) either: a) An American fake-cream-filled snack cake that is consumed in massive numbers, daily. b) A young homosexual male. :P Good to see you're joining the dark side of FWD, we may not be able to drift but the joys of lift-off oversteer are foreign to the RWD people. Well except the MR weirdos :) Quote

Just making sure thats all. Cause there's more then a few tc's getting around that's just had a twin cam swap into their povo pack '82. Quote
