Hey lads,

 

I've come across a problem whilst trying to start the 5k externally. i have the block earthed and the starter motor large wire (positive) on the positive battery terminal. coil is wired directly onto the battery with positive and negative (with balin resistor). I'm using the small wire on the starter to turn it over by touching it on the positive terminal.

 

My problem is that i have no spark, ive swapped multiple coils and have the same problem, i have also swapped the leads.

 

Any idea's where I'm going wrong????

Electronic dizzy or points??

 

Is there spark when you put a screwdriver in the points with the "ignition" on and wiggle it? or take off the dizzy cap and turn it over and watch the points- you should see a spark across them every now and then. No spark=problem at coil end or broken wire or condensor shot.

It's points, there is no spark when we turn the engine over from the coil to earth, is there anything wrong with my wiring? ive already checked for continuity on all wires, i got another coil from my running rolla and wired straight in and had the same problem, it's just got me :(

sooo.... that is running the dizzy as usual, but with the HT lead earthing out??

 

I usually put a spare spark plug in the main coil HT lead and lay it on something metal. You need the points working properly for the coil to spark.

Check your points!!

 

Take the cap off the dizzy and look inside, tell someone to turn over the engine and see if the points are opening and closing.

 

Like altezzaclub has previously stated

 

Oh and what I think he means altezza is that he puts the coil output down to an earth to see if it's out put the spark, not to see if the earth signal from the distributor is on and off.

Yeah I wondered about that Jono. Bit hard without photos!

 

Anyway- how did it turn out Chillin??

 

 

Ill try and get some pics tomorrow, i gave up at 2pm just got frustrated as shit, only thing i noticed is the the coil was getting really hot! will try and nut it out tomorrow and ill update on how i go

Really hot suggests shorting staight to earth..

 

If you take the negative lead off the coil then touch it back on, does it spark?? If it does that means the coil is going to earth somewhere. Then make sure the points are open and do the same again. If it still sparks on that coil spade with the points open there is a short somewhere that shouldn't be.

I think if the coil is always energised and never discharged it will get hot, just check the points and come back cause you said you replaced the coil so that's the last thing.

 

Oh and just double check to see if you have an ignition feed on the positive terminal and that the earth side goes to the coil (and maybe your tacho)

Ive had the same issue (no spark and coils cooking) youd have to have a short somewhere. try looking at the wirking inside the dizzy. my wire to the thingy inside the dizzy whose name escapes me (condensor?) was loose and shorting out

why would you run the negative side of the coil to the battery? :bash:

 

take it off, you are just shorting the coil out!!

Ah...didn't spot that....this could indeed be the problem.
