carbonboy Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 Wasnt happy with how things turned out with the hatch area, so some sanding & washing took place. Then some bogging took place, a combination of bog & blade putty (seperatly of course!). Not a lot happening I know, lots going on in life at the present & not all of it good, but just doing what I can when I can. :sigh: Quote
carbonboy Posted August 24, 2011 Author Report Posted August 24, 2011 *KICK ALONG* All sanded, bloody sore hands again! If this is bad, arthritis must be a real bitch! :( All primered. Some spray putty in areas as well for good measure. Quote
carbonboy Posted August 28, 2011 Author Report Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Started sanding the passenger side quarter panel. Change sandpaper grit. Finer grit again. Get to this point.....& I'm not happy with it... So bog this much again & hit the bare metal patches with primer. Drive to Ballarat, drop some parts off, drive back, scuff up the shiny bits & finish bog work. :) Blocked back all the spot-fills on the drivers side. Sand all of back, dust, wash & a hit of primer. Then some spray putty to make sure I havent left scratches behind unfilled. I don't mind doing this section-by-section style, it allows me to still make progress by doing what I happen to have the time to do on the day. :) Edited August 28, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 Like always ......awesome Cheers mate, hope you're having a good time in Oz so far! :) Yesterdays efforts, started sanding passenger side. Still sanding. Switch grit, keep sanding. More sanding. Nearly forgot about this bit here... Dusted off, washed down, no time to finish it last night. :( So I just hit the bare metal bits with primer to look after themn until I can get back to finish it. Not sure when that'll be, my cousin/housemate was taken to hospital last night not doing too good. That means I'm for the moment the legal-ish guardian of a 10 year old... :blinks: Doing the cars roof scares me less! :laff: Quote
20v4agteEL31 Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 nice progress bro. Hope your cousin's condition gets better. Quote
carbonboy Posted August 31, 2011 Author Report Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) nice progress bro. Hope your cousin's condition gets better. Cheers mate! :y: No idea how I managed to get the time to do this but, progress! Sand it back so I was happy with it. Spotfill & *ahem* "neaten up". Sanded. Spotfilled. All sanded. Dusted off, washed & ready to roll. Primer! :) And a little bit of spray putty... Okay, a lot of spray putty! :laff: Edited September 1, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
TOMsGPTurbo Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Wow looking good! I don't think Toyota themselves gave the AE82 this much attention when they were building it  Quote
carbonboy Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 Wow looking good! I don't think Toyota themselves gave the AE82 this much attention when they were building it  Cheers mate! :y: Speaking of giving attention, Blue Things 2A-C been irritating lately. Topped up the oil & coolant on the weekend & she now wants to do a loping idle, starting at 1500rpm then down to almost stalling then back up again OR just idling at 1800rpm. :blinks: When it was being readied for RWC I just advanced the timing a little (& ran 98 octane) & it idled at around 1200rpm but now I can't rotate the dizzy enough to retard the timing back to 9 degrees BTDC (bottom dizzy vacuum line removed & capped when setting). I've checked all the pollution lines are hooked up correctly & not leaking, the diaphragm's appear to function correctly & all new gaskets on the carb/throttle body/warmer plate. Fuel pump & filter are new & it does this regardless of spark plug/dizzy cap/rotor button condition, also my idle control screw has little effect on reducing the idle speed below previously mentioned RPM. :hmm: I'm questioning the auto-choke, so going to swap one over from my other carby. Also questioning the intake/exhaust manifold gasket as it has not been replaced in my ownership & the headgasket, as when the front end was on stands with the heater fully open & the radiator cap off there was a fairly constant stream of fine bubbles coming up forming a foam. No trace of oil at all though, nothing but clean coolant so the thermostat's getting replaced as well. Actually, I'm questioning a lot, as I have NO idea. Any ideas people? If someone can help me confirm that I don't have to change a head gasket that'd be awesome! :) Fixing up the push bike as I have double block of trade school coming up which is half the distance it is to work, so BT can be off the road for a little bit. That reminds me, better buy that drum of coolant while I still have a car running. Bits. More bits. Cheapy $20 drill for wire brush work. Went through 3 of these (love replacement warranties :laff:) earlier versions before being unable to get one & having to use the good drill. :( They've changed the plastic colour & made the packaging all pretty :lolcry: Oh & Blue Thing has louder tunes now! Yeah it's old, but it cost me postage & a $6 eBay wiring harness. Going to dig up old amp & run rear the speakers off that eventually but atm 4x45 watts is massive compared to what I'm used to' :P As you can tell, I'll spend what money I HAVE to on BT, it's the daily & we have a love/hate relationship. Gokai's the money pit. Quote
Ben-89 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Nice progress Luke, will be one unique ae82 when its done :y: :) In regards to the BT, I am thinking auto choke, is there a rich smell coming from the back of the car when its running? I once had an ae82, went like the clappers with 350,000 on it but the idle when cold was rediculously lumpy, and at operating temp it was it was a little better. But the rich unburnt smell was quite obvious. Maybe BT wants a 4ac :) Quote
carbonboy Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 (edited) My cousin's out of hospital now, not sure of any conclusive results of tests etc but doing much better than a week ago! So getting back to the shed, doing little things like passenger side detailing. Previously applied drivers side detailing sanded, dusted & washed. Primed. Doing this reminded me I still need to finish the jack points... Edited January 7, 2012 by carbonboy Quote

Yep, that rich smell is pretty much always present, except of course when moving. I did have a fiddle with this in the past, but will swap it over this time around & see what happens. Cheers for the help mate! :y: Maybe BT wants a 4ac :) If or when the 2ac dies, that's the most likely thing to happen. Edited September 18, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted September 18, 2011 Author Report Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) Not too much happening at the moment, wanting to rebuild my old pushbike before I rip the intake manifold (well both manifolds as it's a stupid combined manifold setup) off Blue Thing (convinced I have a vacuum leak, swapped over the auto-choke & nothing changed) as odds are it'll be off the road for at least two days. The bike I pulled apart, threw away anything that was worn out & this is what I was left with: All the bushes in the pivot points of the rear swingarm were shot & every bike store I went to had no clue as to where to source new ones. So I made my own, using 1/2" copper tube & some polypropylene washers. No sloppy bits now! Plus a seat post clamp, heatset & bare handlebars... Everything else is arriving at my door all shiny new courtesy of ebay hopefully sometime this week, I <3 free shipping! Anyways, back to the car... Got the passenger side lower door sill detailing sanded & spot filled. All sanded & washed. Edited September 18, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
carbonboy Posted September 18, 2011 Author Report Posted September 18, 2011 Now coated in a primer-like substance. :D Complete with spray putty for the bogged bits. Have to go back & touch up the drivers side of this, as I've compared the two & I've done a better job of the passenger side... :bash: :laff: Then the upper areas & the bailey channels...possibly! Quote
