carbonboy Posted May 23, 2011 Author Report Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) I'm already wondering how much you're going to spend on this, in Bog, Paint, and Fingers. :hmm: Looking really good. Hope to see this on a Rolla Cruise............ one day. :) Josh  Too much! :lolcry: I don't have a set budget, but at the same time I'm trying to keep it somewhat sensible. The topcoats are all sorted, probably going to have to buy another 4 litre primer as I want to go over it again after I've rubbed it all back so that the base coat goes onto the same surface everywhere, as you can tell the current stuff is a bit of a mix 'n match :( GOR 2013? :P Hoping for 2012, failing that, Picnic @ Hanging Rock. We'll see! looking forward to the roof fix... roofs are extremely hard to panel beat/get straight.. a apanel beater once told me that if you've reached the skills of your panel beating to then mix up a HUGE amount of bog... and bog the whole roof in one hit.. then cutback to straightness.. but need to make sure that the bog will be thick enough cos if you need to bog more than once its starts getting even worse. I'm glad someone's looking forward to it :lolcry: Thanks man :y: it'll be a massive relief once this is done. I agree completely, big & flat-ish shows up imperfections something chronic. I think I went past the limit of my panel beating skills a while back... :laff: On a serious note I think I can get it a bit better, the more I look at it & think about it all, the more I think I've put it under stress/tension when I welded it :hmm: If I can release this, I should be able to pop it back to the shape I want (or better than current) & re-weld it there. Then that big batch of bog you mentioned... *Note* In case anyone's wondering, I hadnt planned on rebuilding this car, so the fact it had a hole where a sunroof used to be wasnt a problem then. I spent about 6 months trying to track down a sunroof to fit, the only ones I could find to fit the size hole I had were: brand new (Hollandia) were $2k (not-fitted), a NOS (brand I can't remember) $500 (not-fitted) & still required similar work to this one to make fit :( So when I was at Pick-A-Part hunting a side mirror for a friend & the car I got the mirror from had this with new-looking seals for $90... Plan B was to drill the spotwelds, remove the entire roof panel off both cars & swap over :blinks: I'd prefer to avoid that amount of work if at all possible! carbonboy Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 So I got into the shed, unrolled the faithful camping mat to keep the body happy, slapped on the dustmask/goggles & went-a-sanding... I wasnt happy with the shape/feel of it, so I roughed up all the unsanded spots & bogged again :( Backs to sanding again. I <3 bog dust :no2: After the first round of shaping, it was looking like this :) After the next lot of sanding to smooth things out a bit, it looked like this. Then after a dust off/wash down & one coat of primer, it looks like this. Finally after another two coats, it looks like this  Quote
67Rolla-Ken Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 Wow... that looks absolutely perfect! Pity no one really looks at wheel wells, I'll try and remember to if I ever get to see your car  Quote

Pity no one really looks at wheel wells, I'll try and remember to if I ever get to see your car  When it's in the water only the fishes will see it, but that didnt stop me painting my boat in the image of Darth Mauls (Star Wars) face  Thanks man! :y: If it were to be inspected for RWC & there was this big, ugly, mangled-looking repaired section questions might be asked. If it looks like nothing ever happened here, mission objective completed  A few pinholes to fill here & there but all good otherwise. Think of this as my practice for the sunroof section  Edited May 29, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
Kid-Ae Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 I love your work! Attention to detail is so impressive. Come fix the spare wheel well on Bucket? ;) Quote

Come fix the spare wheel well on Bucket? ;) Cheers mate, I figure if I do less than half decent work you guys on here will let me know about it  Erm....pass? Got home at 4am today, very, very sore from laying on back sanding :( Quote
carbonboy Posted May 31, 2011 Author Report Posted May 31, 2011 speech less. too good  Too kind... The photos don't show what I can see, but nothing a little spray putty/blade putty wont take care of! :) Next stop, that damn roof! Quote
Drewby Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Just awesome mate. You've got some testicles going at this project the way you have. Keep up the motivation and it'll be a sweet, sweet ride when finished. D Quote
ke70dave Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 i just hope that the bog stays there...hopefully you don't pick up a large rock one day and crack the bog off! looks good now though. Quote

Keep up the motivation and it'll be a sweet, sweet ride when finished. D Cheers man :y: I know what I want as an end result & what it's going to take to get it... A lot of hard work :) Keeps me outta trouble I guess. i just hope that the bog stays there...hopefully you don't pick up a large rock one day and crack the bog off! looks good now though. I hope you don't mean large as in off-road large? :blinks: Not a chance of this going on the dirt once finished :laff: I'm confident I prepped it all properly so it's not just going to fall off. Hopefully I don't slap it on a speedhump resulting in the same thing  Quote
carbonboy Posted June 1, 2011 Author Report Posted June 1, 2011 Okay, I know it's a wheel tub, but... I wasnt happy with how the flat sections going from the centre to the sides looked in the light/shadows :( It gave away that the shape wasnt quite right. Also wasnt happy with the feel of the curve from horizontal to vertical at the rear, so gave that a sand too. Determined I didnt like the rest of it either  Please excuse my scribblings if you notice small pencil marks, they were my notes on what was needed & where. Previously mentioned pinholes, darn air entrapment! Some primer to cover bare metal. Then some spray putty where needed. I had intentions of doing some minor bog work, however it was late & not to sound soft but, F-ING COLD last night :( The little electric heater I had did virtually nothing so gave up when I realised I couldnt feel my hands or feet. 67Rolla-Ken Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 (edited) Now I'm beginning to think you need therapy  ...move on from the wheel well ;) Are you staying on the wheel well to avoid working on the roof?? :hmm: Edit: Just reading that back to myself and thought "maybe the humorous tone I mean this in isn't conveyed". Still loving your work, and I could see what you were fixing in the pics with the light in the well. Does look a lot smoother in the last pic :y: Edited June 1, 2011 by 67Rolla-Ken Quote

Still loving your work, and I could see what you were fixing in the pics with the light in the well. Does look a lot smoother in the last pic :y: It's quite possible, I just don't have that kind of money  If I was going to be paying hundreds of dollars to lay on my back & talk about my problems, I'd be going to someone other than a therapist  It's taking all the mental strength I have to NOT bog all the spot welds around the hatch area, holding out well so far. :laff: There is maybe a little bit of not wanting to do the roof as I know what a headache it's gonna be...might be cutting out the welded in piece yet as new information has come to my attention, still deciding :hmm: Humourous/tongue-in-cheek tone noted  All good man, havent had trouble interpreting your posts yet :P I think of things this way: If I spend this amount of time making stuff you probably wont see look good, imagine what I'm gonna do with stuff you can. carbonboy Posted June 3, 2011 Author Report Posted June 3, 2011 (edited) Honestly, I got a bit weary of dealing with the roof section. When I was doing the engine bay works I found it getting harder & harder to get motivated to do much. This was simply because of being in the one place for an extended period, doing the same stuff :( I've found by breaking things up by having other things to kick along another stage or so lets me think about things a bit more, clear the head  Enough D&M, update! Back in the wheel tub I did me a 'lil sanding...didnt like the feel of it all :hmm: (same shot, just with/without flash, differences in lighting can help show up what I'm chasing after) Somebody hide the damn filler can! *Note the spot welds left un-bogged* This kinda looks like my welding :laff: Shaping, without & with flash. Dusted off, washed down & gave the bare metal a shot of primer & some spray putty where needed. I had some bubbling of the primer near the rear, possibly contamination, possibly vapour bubbles from me spraying too much primer at once. Fixed now either way  With/without flash. It was late, it was cold, I'd had enough for the night. :P Edited June 3, 2011 by carbonboy Quote
