Hi all,

I'm looking at taking possession of a 1998 Altezza in the next month or so. The car has had a big wack up the rear and is unrepairable.

The plan is to swap over everything in the engine bay (or as much as we can fit) into my wife's 1982 Celica. This Altezza has the 147kW 3SGE with the 5sp auto gearbox. We also want to fit the dash display and center consol into the Celica.

My first question is what diff would you suggest we use with this setup??

We hope to buy and fit the diff for less than a grand (less than $500 if possible, not counting the custom drive shaft).

I will keep you all posted as things progress and I'm sure I will have many more questions.

Scrap the ra60 idea. Sell it in favour on an sa63, same body style but with better headlights, tailights, grill etc.

theyre 2sc so the conversion is much easier, use the celica mounts straight into the crossmember. and it'd go straigh to the factory box and bellhousing if you decide to go manual..

also an ma61 lsd diff goes in with ease as they're irs not live axle so you don't have to change axles etc.

but then you'll also need an ma61 fuel tank even if you use the ra60 because ma61's where efi therefor have the intank fuel pump not mechanical.

cheers

Hmm :hmm:

No way I'm scrapping the RA60 idea, but I might look at getting an SA63 to scrap for parts

I wonder if the cross member in my 1SGE powered Corona will fit in the RA60?? If not I'll look for a wrecked SA63.

As the MA61 is the same body as the RA60 I assume an MA61 rear end will fit under the RA60? This will handle the 147kW??

I'm sure fuel pump won't be hard to sort out...

Or sell it to me... mwahahaha.

I agree that MA61, SA63 or even RA65 would be a better option... T series diff will be near the upper limits of what it'll appreciate, plus I know how you drive. lol.

The F series in the MA61 comes with LSD and bulk torque handling potential, so shouldn't have an issue.

As for fitting a live axle F? good luck finding one. MA45 celica is the one you need, and the one you'll struggle (like everyone else) to find... It's been suggested (read: NOT CONFIRMED) that they fit very easily into the RA60s

Apparently they aren't, the MA61 is supposedly wider.

news to me? the diff's are the same size, as are the axles/ drive shafts so the only difference would come from the wishbones and or brakes which i think are the same also but i'd have to check with a mate

The sa63 has a T series IRS diff of 6.7" and the ra65 had the F series 7.5" if I'm correct. But the casing was the same size and you can swap the diffs out and use the existing axles/ driveshafts/ wishbones.

Also an mx73 diff will fit in the factory rear frame, i think it needs a few things off the existing diff to do so though, also using the mx73 rear wishbones and driveshafts will net you 30mm~ rear track increase per side and a neat slotted rotor upgrade

I jz is a better option

This.

btw to convert to ra65 front you don't need to change guards, they're the same, and you can even use the stock the bonnet if you're good enough with a grinder. The ra60 tailights annoy me the most

Refer this thread:

During the 1st rebuild John purchased an RA65 hatch and it was too narrow, he had to get a MA61 hatch.

The guy i got my celica off has an ra65 hatch on his ma61. Theyre the same car from the firewall back just the extended the body between the firewall and the arch for 5m 6cyl. I've even seen ma61 front's grafted to a celica.

So i have no idea how a celica hatch could be too narrow when they're the same..

If you want to join Altezzaclub let me know, some of the guys on there put the 3SGE into other bodies.

and if you want to replace your lightweight, screaming 4cyl with a gigantic boat anchor that needs two turbos to get going, buy the Supra 1JZ I advertised the other day and suffer the understeer... :laff:

Bolded parts...

I don't believe it, just what I was told when after the car got built.
