altezzaclub Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 How muxh work have you done on cars in the past?? Can you pull a head off and recondition the valves? Work out the compression ratio?? Do you have a mate who can do that or give you a hand?? The answers to those questions will determine what you can do for a given budget... Quote
mooseman426 Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Built my 4k just before christmas. Put in a Tighe 150A cam ($160 I think), Holden 6 cyl red motor valve springs ($20 from the wreckers), took 60 thou off the head ($60), cleaned up valve seats with grinding paste ($7). Get yourself a dremel and match the inlet and exhaust ports to the manifolds, and carefully clean up the bowls (just do the ends of the valve guides if you're unsure what the bowls need). I used Holden V8 valve spring retainers, this gave me enough spring length to stop them binding up. This required me to round the contact face of the rockers slightly, just a bit on the corners. Throw in a VRS set ($50) and away she went. May need to add a bit for tuning, it will definitely need one. I already had a 32/36 weber, 5k ignition and extractors, so you may need to add a little for these too if desired, otherwise go for a smaller cam. I'm happy with how mine has turned out, just needs to tuned a little better still and needs 100 thou taken off the rocker posts. Has flashed up to 9000rpm with no problems, and gets taken to 7700rpm during khanacross. Hope this helps Quote

First step is the measure compression on current motor, This will give you a indication of its wear. If the compression is good. Cam, If in Melbourne go Wade, Clive or Crow, If not ask around here. While the cams out get a fresh chain, and gears. Take the time to dial the cam in, and most important set valve lash to grinder recommendions. Head Shave the head, and get the ports and springs worked over, remember use 4k valves, and rocker gear, Beware rocker gear bolts from early model 3k's are longer use them and you will strip threads, also back rockers right off before removing are installing as the threads in the head strip easy. don't get to fussed about finding a bigport head as once a small port is done up will flow better than a bigport. Exhaust Extractors or the go. Carby Nikki off a Gemini is the go check out the rolla club wiki for details. IF you have to replace the clutch get the flywheel lightened, This makes for 1st and second to be very zappy. If the compression is low you will need a bottom end rebuild. Remember your talking 1.3 litres, no EFI, At best you will keep up with stock commodores and falcons. The good side is the lump at idle will turn heads. The small revvy motor is fun to drive. Quote
