ancullen Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Seeing the answers the KE30/55 front caliper issue, as well as the issue of VN pads on KE55 Girlock calipers has made me go searching for prices on VN pads (15% off at Repco on Ferodo, PBR Performance and Bendix Ultimate pads until 23/10/05 by the way). In my search, I decided to have a look at the DBA site (can't remember why), and while checking out the drum brakes, I noticed the following: Quote
ancullen Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 (edited) And this: Edited October 6, 2005 by ancullen Quote
ancullen Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 (edited) So what is it I'm getting at? Well, it would appear to me that while the Corolla and Lite-Ace share the same rear drums (part number 1735), the front drums from the Lite-Ace (part number 1734) appear to be almost exactly the same, except the are wider, which would to me means greater braking power (correct?). So wouldn't it be possible to fit Lite-Ace front drums instead of Corolla rear drums? I presume this might push the rear track out a few millimetres either side, but that would be another benefit. Anyone see a problem with this? Edited October 6, 2005 by ancullen Quote
demuire Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 Wouldn't you need longer axles then? Or a spacer between the axle and the drum? Quote
Super Jamie Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 don't even start on stopping power of drums vs width  and fook's right, you'd need a custom axle so the flange is longer to accomodate the extra drum width. it would be alot of engineering for very little return. you can bolt ke55/ta22 drums and backing plates to ke30 axles, that's about it Quote
ancullen Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Bugger. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Quote
Trent-KE30 Posted October 7, 2005 Author Report Posted October 7, 2005 So if I'm going to use the girlock caliper i have to use the girlock disc and pads as well? Quote
Super Jamie Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 So if I'm going to use the girlock caliper i have to use the girlock disc and pads as well? it's been said three times in this thread already. YES! Quote
Felix Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 yes, but if he was to use the early thin discs (2.5 mm thinner) with the late calipers, and use the commodore pads (which need thinning 1.2mm per pad, ie 2.4mm per pair) , i don't think he would need to modify the pads. might be a straight bolt up??? Trent-KE30 Posted October 7, 2005 Author Report Posted October 7, 2005 Hmm good point you make Felix, Â Thanks Superjamie i was just making sure  its just that the discs on there now have just been reground and new pads. Â With grinding some of the caliper away, my old man mentioned that will it still be road worthy? do they check things like that? Â Cheers Trent Quote
kangaroosa Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 With grinding some of the caliper away, my old man mentioned that will it still be road worthy? do they check things like that? Cheers Trent I would imagine that its not something that they would normally check. They would most definately check the rotors and pads though. However, if you did a rough job and it stood out like dogs balls, well then the inspector would almost certainly spot it. As for the Police checking it.......well i have never seen them pull people over to check out their calipers (your calipers will be hidden behind your wheels anyway).  Just do a nice clean job. Make sure its not all scratched and jagged. Spray a few coats of Hi-Temp black paint on to disguise your handy work. Quote
Trent-KE30 Posted October 7, 2005 Author Report Posted October 7, 2005 Ah thanks Kangaroos you've been a great help along with fooky and the others, Â thanks for the useful information, i know which forum i will be frequenting more often now rather than toymods. Â Trent Quote
Dan Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 How would you suggest that I could shave the 1.2mm off? Also (sorry, don't know much about brakes) is there like, wet weather braking pads/mud-rally ones? Because the speedway cars don't have much stopping power full-stop... I reckon a little bit would do the trick... Â Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this... I want to learn... Quote

That sounds like a bloody good idea. And it sounds better to me than shaving back the pads. Nice one Felix! Quote
