lanceishere Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 so I love my ke70, but I'm not the biggest 4k fan... do I've been toying with the idea of an 18-RG keto. why? - carbs! fuel injection just isn't sexy... - twincam - good following, proven performer - something a little different now, I know it's been done before, and I'm a bit of a rolla n00b, so I was wondering if anyone had some pointers/ rough projection of costs/ knows where I can get one/ general information I might find useful? cheers, lance Quote
TRD ke70 Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Hard to find engine parts for them now. Had an engine that needed pistons, had to get them from the US. Sorry mate, but old,out of date and HEAVY!!, there's a lot better engine out there. Quote

I'm building a worked 18RG for a mate and its costing him a lot and taking f@$k loads of time finding parts. Quote
7shades Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 The R series started life in the 50's man... They're old, heavy, and (comparitively) inefficient. They USED to have a following... Back in ye olde times (shit I owned heaps) but that was before newer, better engines became cheap. Put it this way. The BEST factory built version of the 18R, the GEU, made 100 odd KW. That's the same as a 1996 5FSE Camry. Quote
lanceishere Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 4age sheep it is then I suppose :/ might look into a 2tc though Quote
ke70dave Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Theres a reason everyone does 4age though, it works and it works well. Quote
Redwarf Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 A 2T-C you paint blue so you don't scare the fish. The only 2T worth even contemplating is the 2TG. Even the you will get more reliability and reliable horse power out of a 4A. And this is coming from someone with a 2TG. Quote
7shades Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Twin carbs on a 7k has been done... With rather spectacular results Quote
love ke70 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 go 3t, i need someone to buy mine once i pull it out of the te72 :P Quote
toyota_ae71 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 don't go 2tg or 18rg, i've had a 2tg and just brought an 18rg. The 2tg looked good in theory when i brought it, but once it shit itself i was looking at big dollars for a rebuild. 18rg, i was lucky enough to get a car with one installed and all the parts were there, but everytime i walk into ANY parts stores they twist their heads and scracth their fanny as soon as i mention 18RG. My opinion, go 3tc IF you can't afford 4age. Cheap, reliable, good power can be made. But they still arent a 4age. Quote
silverra23 Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I had a 18rg rebuilt recently.. cost me bucket loads.... $900ish for the custom arias pistons from the USA... $250 for the gasket set from SW Motorsport if I recall correctly... then $200 for the custom Cometic headgasket from the USA cos I went big pistons... $800 to fix corrosion in the head... plus usual machining moneys, bearings, etc etc. Then it was another $500 or so for getting the carbys rebuilt.... Sounds awesome though :) Quote
stocti Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Dam it I just bough a ae71 and have a 18rg ready to go??? what should I do? Put it in till it blows then ditch it? what gear boxes do they run? Quote
19914afc Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 if you have all thbits to put it in already just do that till it blows, pretty sure they run a W series box. Quote
