TomoKE55 Posted December 28, 2010 Report Posted December 28, 2010 (edited) Hey, I bought this 2 door ke30 about a month ago for parts for my other one but when i got it home decided it was too good to strip so decided to give her a fresh coat of paint and use it as a daily. So far i've sanded all the black paint off, replaced the bonnet and bootlid(twice) and started straightening out the body, the passenger side rear quarter needed a fair bit of work, but i think i got it alright, and a bad dent just behind the drivers door, other than that it's just the usual small dents around the door handles/locks and the tops of the front quarters. It's running a warm 4k, with extractors and a 2" exhaust Suspension and brakes are stock but the front end has been fully rebuilt with nolathane bushes The body is pretty much rust free, besides the bottoms of the doors and the top of the drivers pillar but nothing major. Plans are to get her straight and painted as a daily, probably going back the original yellow. Finished!...sorta. As always plans changed, painted it red instead. I forgot to take a before photo but all around the handle and lock were rooted, i've skimmed half the door with filler to fix it. I'm more than happy to listen to any advice, i'm having a go but i'm not a pro. FINALLY got the bodywork finished today. Then got some plastic and prep'd the shed. even managed to get the primer on  going to wet rub her tonight and hopefully paint tomorrow, decided on monza red(cos it was cheap, lol) Edited April 2, 2011 by TomoKE55 Quote

TomoKE55 Posted January 16, 2011 Author Report Posted January 16, 2011 Cheers jason, it's coming along nicely. Just finished painting  could have been better but i think i did well for a first attempt. now for the fun bit, trying to find all the bits i pulled off lol still have to buff it aswell. Quote
ijg033 Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 (edited) G'day Tom , its come up looking pretty straight , well done on your 1st attempt , Can I ask what tip size you were using on your spray gun as the paint looks a bit dry , The ideal tip to use with acrylic in average temperatures is 2.0mm if you used a smaller one it would explain the dryness or its from the gun not being adjusted correctly , the other thing that may cause this is you moving to fast or being to far away from the car , If you want it better why not wet rub it with 800 & then throw another coat or 2 over it before putting back together & thinking maybe I should've , (Yes speaking from my previous mistakes lol) You'll only need another litre of paint & a bit more thinners , or just keep it in mind for next time Cheers Dave Edited January 16, 2011 by ijg033 Quote
TomoKE55 Posted January 16, 2011 Author Report Posted January 16, 2011 i wouldn't have a clue what size the gun is, just a cheapy i grabbed from bunnings this morning lol. i wet rubbed it with 400 after 2 coats and then gave it one more, i think experience is the key there. i'm already intending to re-paint it in 6-12 months anyway, was just trying to neaten her up. do you reckon i could buff it up to more of a gloss? and what should i use? Cheers, Tom Quote
bmxsexmonkey Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Ah it's all good as is. Just do a rising sun decal down the side and bam jdm haha Quote
ijg033 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 i wouldn't have a clue what size the gun is, just a cheapy i grabbed from bunnings this morning lol. i wet rubbed it with 400 after 2 coats and then gave it one more, i think experience is the key there. i'm already intending to re-paint it in 6-12 months anyway, was just trying to neaten her up. do you reckon i could buff it up to more of a gloss? and what should i use? Cheers, Tom G'day Tom , yeah rub it back with 1200 wet on a "Colour Sanding Block" (these are thin foam blocks)& then buff it using a 7in sander/buffer with a Foam pad on it & Buffing compound, Keep the pad damp/wet & also spray water onto the car using a spray bottle , Make sure you do this out of the sun , Don't Buff any edges of the car on purpose unless your've finished everywhere else as you'll generally cover these without even knowing it & if you do buff them to much you'll go straight through the colour , I always if Possible Buff the car prior to any fitment of outside trims as the Compound makes a mess & sticks well everywhere & is a pain to get out of all the exterior Trim , creases & seams , It just gets everywhere & is much easy to clean off if you buff prior to reassembly , Cheers Dave Quote
ijg033 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Also the Spray gun will have the size on the Tip < Cheers Dave Quote
