SLW42 Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Hi guys and girls as the title states i need opinions on weather or not to re shell. As the ke i've got now is a rusty POS, and has holes everywhere, i.e in the spare wheel well there is big holes, under the right hand side of the rear window, you can see into the car, the top of the c pillar is bogged up,, the rear guards are full of rust,....... Enough said, Were as the pearl is nearly rust free but will need EVERYTHING swapped Question is will it be worth swapping everything over into a cleaner shell???? Quote
ke70dave Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 want my oppinion? pick a car and make a SUCCESS of it. "the black pearl" wasnt really a success at all, and sounds like neither is this one. if you keep switching cars/shells you wont get anywhere, which i belive is what is happening atm. alternatively, scrap everything. and spend 1500 on a registered ke70 with no damage. and start from there. or if you are keen, get stuck into fixing this one. welding in new bits of metal where required, and end up with a good condition car that will last. but its going to take commitment and effort. its not worth reshelling a stock ke70 thats for sure. i bought a ke70 5yrs ago for $350, within 1 week i had a legitimate RWC for it. in saying that...when you say "everything swapped".....on a ke70, thats like 3 days work if that. but my key point is, pick one and commit to it. commit to making a success of it!! jimmy-d Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 Got to say I agree with ke70dave,the rusted shell sounds terrible,I'm not familiar with the condition of the "pearl" but you really do need to make a decision to commit and then just get on with it.I can't see swapping things over being a big deal, are there other issues you haven't mentioned that make it a problem or are you just not sure about your committment to the car, maybe underneath you want to update and thats holding you back! Anyway,I'm sure that there will be many conflicting opinions here so really its just up to you so good luck either way you choose to go.. Quote
SLW42 Posted December 23, 2010 Author Report Posted December 23, 2010 yes you do have a point there dave, it's just this car has too much rust in it for me to spend money on it getting it fixed, You bring alot of good points to the table sir, and i agree with alot of them, it's not so much re shelling a stock keto though, it's just starting again with a much better shell I just need to know is it gonna be worth it just to start with a cleaner shell Quote
ke70dave Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 also remember we are playing with ~30yr old cars. its getting harder and harder to find them in non rusted condition. some people get lucky and find bargains. but often you will have to pay top dollar if you want a clean slate to start with. (which is what i should have done, but we live and learn...) or like the rest of us do, is put up with the rust and just fix it. and hopefully do a good enough job so that the rust doesnt come back! got any pics of the rust? B.L.Z.BUB Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 You'll kick yourself for throwing the 5k in the white one if you re-shell it. There is always the option of throwing some beers in the fridge and getting some willing hands around for a weekend. That white one is pretty bad bro. But low key. Best time to do it is when you aint working though. Plenty of time. I say scrap it all and sell me your 5K and seats, but thats just me :P I was lucky I got mine way out west and had minimal rust, though was a country car. Cheap, overrated body (rust and dent wise), but shit everything else(hence why I went all out). Should of kept that overrated as blue one I sold you. That had bugger all rust!! Quote
SLW42 Posted December 23, 2010 Author Report Posted December 23, 2010 the blue one had heaps in the rear guards aye :( yeah i might kick myself once i swap everything back but atleast it wont be full of rust like the white ke is :bash: yeah beers are always in the fridge hahahaha, then there is the half bottle of turkey hanging around are ya keen reed??? and the seats and 5k stay with me lol :P Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 I don't mind helping but I have a woman&kid so it has to be planned ahead. Another possibility is getting a Hyundai Excel or some other FWD piece of shit cheap. Putting both cars off the road and re-shell over time and do it slowly. I drove an 89 Ford Laser for a year getting mine on the road. And when it was on the road it was good, not half good. And I live in a townhouse with NO parking. Quote
SLW42 Posted December 23, 2010 Author Report Posted December 23, 2010 oh yeah good point man, the misso has a excel lol i always drive her around so she can drive me around hehehe, I don't think it would take any longer than a full weekend, with about 3 people ripping it apart and swapping stuff mind you i did an engine swap in 12hrs with about 5hrs help from chris (undertaker) Quote
KENut Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 mind you i did an engine swap in 12hrs with about 5hrs help from chris (undertaker) Gee you work slow huh :laff: I think I'm down to about 6 hrs including tuned and tested. Still to slow for my liking Quote
SLW42 Posted December 24, 2010 Author Report Posted December 24, 2010 yeah but what do you use to make it easier?? Do you have an engine crane?? A hoist?? Or even a trolley jack?? I don't have either of them and it takes me 12hrs, it's not a race i don't try to do it as fast as possible to say i do it in this time, i was just stating the fact it takes me that long, Fair enough there are people out there that can do it faster and thats good for them, like your self i congratulate you for being able to do it in 6hrs Quote
RainWarriorDregs Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 go for it i say man, keep the white one and fix the rust, thats nothing compared to what was in my 70 Kaye. if you love it keep it. if not, just scrap it and buy a new shell without the rust. depends how much you love the shell? i could never get rid of mine. no matter how much rust it develops good luck tho Quote
ke70dave Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) come on guys stop arguing how long it takes to change a 1.3L carby motor, who cares how long it takes. (i did a 4age conversion on my car in 3 days (drove home on friday afternoon with the 4k, took it for a test drive on monday morning with the 4age), a little over 20hrs of working id say, so ner!) cars are for driving, not for working on. if the amount of time you spend working on a car exceeds the amount of time you are driving it, your doing it wrong. Jono.C Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 if the amount of time you spend working on a car exceeds the amount of time you are driving it, your doing it wrong. i like that  my mates ke30 had much more rust then that. one weekend, a slab of beer and a paddock basher later it was rust free. It's just about deciding what you want, and then going for it Quote
