salvage Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 objective - dedicated drift car i bought the 70 for $600 from a little old lady in north brisbane, the car was immaculate! not a spot of rust, interior was clean motor was great. unfortunatly due to switching jobs like pairs of underpants, the car had to sit in the yard for about a year. at times it had a p76 leyland v8 or a ca18 sitting in the engine bay, but both required wayyyy to much work. then one day i was sitting around thinking. hey wait. i have a mazda Bp 1.8 dohc sitting in my laser (did the conversion a year or 2 ago).. conversion to rwd (ding!) so i start googling for information on people that have done a conversion like this into a ke70. NOTHING! so i guess this will make it stand out from the crowd. the motor is originally from a 323gtx, non turbo, but to get on track I'm going to buy a bpt and build that later. ive only really got one picture of the rolla when i first got it, silly me forgot to backup alot of stuff before the computer brokedown -_- so lately ive installed a Cusco 5 point roll cage, half way thru the engine mounts, shaved the rear door handles, sanded the car back, pumped the guards (bog was old and didnt go off, dad redid them in fibreglass),stripped the whole car out and painted inside, under and the whole front end(enginebay, under front QTR panels) in subframe black. iv aquired an mx5 gearbox, t3 turbo, sc12, s13 front suspension and brakes(am still to get the coilovers and tierod ends -suggestions), heavy duty exedy clutch and a bride bucket seat, I'm sure theres more but hey, I'm on the computer not in the shed. the next move is to finish these engine mounts, deal with the exhaust manifold and intake, also how much boost is safe for a motor which is n/a? I'm thinking if i can just run a little boost itl be better than nothing. when i get a bpt itll be getting the works internals and all. I'm open to any suggestions! oh and this was my old corolla, that i sold recently Quote
SLW42 Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 ummmmm ra60 rack ends and stock keto tie rods will get ya s13 gear straight, i know this as i have an s13 front in my ke70, i dunno man maybe 5 - 10 psi would be fun :D , Good luck with it bud seems like fun Quote
altezzaclub Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 So is that the MX5 motor? I reckon it would make the best swap, an MX5 motor and 6speed, its already setup for RWD and has modern fuel injection, twincam etc. So very few RWD motors now under 1800cc. Quote
salvage Posted November 19, 2010 Author Report Posted November 19, 2010 nah its staight out of a 323 gtx. fwd, but we are making the changes to have it rwd. oh and ive only got the 5 speed. the mx5's have a very similar bp, luckily it looks like the manifolds and stuff can be used on mine Quote
SLO-030 Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Wpn36 was going to do the same conversion. Rather easy to RWD too! Gonna be running the water thru the front of the head? Quote
salvage Posted November 19, 2010 Author Report Posted November 19, 2010 ahh thats one thing i need clarifying, why do they change the water pump when converting to rwd? my understanding is a water pump is a water pump, they both flow water thru the same holes? Quote
SLO-030 Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 Nah, apparently there is a welsh plug and tapped holes in the front of the head behind the timing belt cover. this is how the RWD variants have their cooling setup. Knock the welsh plug out, bolt up thermostat. Or so i understand. Quote
LXY-642 Posted November 25, 2010 Report Posted November 25, 2010 yeah what slo-030 said. just go to a local mazda dealer and grab an mx5 thermostat and bolt it onto the front, it's under the belt cover, take the belt cover off and you'll see it. and get an mx5 crank angle sensor and coil setup cause the dizzy takes up to much room on the back of the head, i also still have my 2 bp motor's sitting in the shed. goodluck with it mate. and they can take up to 14psi from memory with a t28.
