jimi91 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 (edited) hey guys My plan is to get a standard 4k block and modify into a race engine, ill get forged pistons prob around 83mm a race crankshaft and camshaft not sure on sizes yet??? will do alot of head work like bigger valves and ports. My first question is what are the best brands for pistons, crankshaft and camshafts(crowcams etc). Where is the best place(ebay, online or shops) and what size valves and ports should i go on the head ????? Second if i do all this to the engine will i need a longer stroke if so how much by???? What are the best conrods for the job???? Third if i am doing a elec dissy where do i get those rebuilt starlet dissy's form the states, my plan is to run individual coils per spark plug which will make a better and more accurate spark  what kind of module should i run and whats the best one ???? I will be running this engine in my future sprinter and will have 40mm webbers and i will hope to take this car to track days around aus to all the great race tracks !!! Sorry for all the ques but this is all i think about at work and what to do???? :hmm: Edited November 16, 2010 by jimi91 Quote
KENut Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 You might have trouble getting pistons that big into a 4K. Apparently you need a commercial block if you want to bore it that big. Might be easier to start with a 5K block. Quote
jimi91 Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 well what if i go to a smaller size piston like 80 or 81mm hmmm :hmm: whats the standard 4k piston size anyway???? see ya jimi Quote
Evan G Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 don't even think twice, go 5k or go home Quote
jimi91 Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 why 5k tho wats the dif between them and most race corollas have been 4k so why not stick with the rest ????? see ya jimi Quote
jimi91 Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 (edited) this is what i would love to have but i can't :bash: ill build something close to it lol :lolcry: i would love the head and intake of this race car  and yes this is a 3k but with a twin cam head :hmm: see ya jimi Edited November 16, 2010 by jimi91 Quote
GJM85 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Young fello. Get that car out from the bush and assess the extent of the body and structural work needed to salvage it. I can see years of prospecting just to restore it to begin with. You'll need to find a ke20 to scab bits off where you can. Before you even think about a motor, get it garaged and stripped. I spent over 7000$ on body work on my 20 and it looked alot better than your 17 does at the moment, so I hope your good with your hands. I feel your sleeper could stay sleeping.... 1 Quote
Evan G Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 4k = 253 , 5k = 308 same but different. brother from different mother Quote
camerondownunder88 Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Hi, I will have to agree here with GJM85 here. a KE15/17 is HARD to do anything with even to service and get parts let alone restore. Id be trying to get yours on the road first before a motor. Motor makes it go but with 40-year-old single circuit brakes and poor safety features I know I spent my money first on larger brakes suspension before thinking about my motor. as for 4k to 5k debate. I found it was pure torque :) Also 5K normally dished piston these burn better and factory put out about 2kw more than a -c variant overall there better port shape etc so start with a good base 5K. But collect 4K parts like cranks etc they fit 5k and are good for spares. Cameron Quote
ae824ate Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Mate, please. I don't want to be rude, but do a little research. Just reading your first post makes me want to cry, and i don't even work with k series engines much. Google is great, rollaclub is great, there is so much info around, if your gonna spend that sorta money on a rebuild, don't!! Too much custom made, or hard to find and expensive shit, when you could buy, say a na sr20 cut, 4age cut, ca18de/t cut, 3sge/gte, etc etc etc. So much id like to be able to say to you, but my fingers are sore from typing..... Trev Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Sorry GJM, I accidently hit neg rep while scrolling down. If it was me, I'd go 4k unless, the 5k is a torque motor and you wanna add to that by putting bigger pistons in it, bore = torque, stroke = horsepower. 1 Quote
ae824ate Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 My alternative answer is, 1st question. Pistons, arias or wiseco if they make them, look around for other manufacturers, and a custom crank will cost an arm, i havnt seen any off the shelf cranks. Stick with the original one, they take alot to break :P 2nd question. You wont need a longer stroke, no point. Best conrods will be forged and shotpeened, may have to be custom made, but have a look around. 3rd, MSD may have a kit that will suit, have a look, and some other brands come with the hall effect sensor etc in the kit that you can adjust to whatever you want it to do. Sorry if i have rambled on, ive had a couple :rolls: Best of luck mate, keep it posted. Quote
Doogs Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 (edited) Go for a 5k, why spend money increasing the capacity of a 4k when a 5k is 200cc bigger to start with? Have a good read of this article you will find some good starting tips there. If you are doing the bodywork with your old man instead of paying someone, there is no reason for it to be an expensive process. It will be very time consuming but you will learn a great deal and save a heap of cash. I will also add, it's a really good idea to upgrade the handling side of things before huge power upgrades are made. There is no point having plenty of power on tap, but the brakes are not up to the task of stopping the car and the car understeers and bodyrolls like crazy. Good tyres and a swaybar should be your first step as well as replacing worn out shockers and upgrading to later model disks. Get into it! :) Edited November 17, 2010 by Doogs Quote
jimi91 Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 alright thanks guys for all the help!!! gjm85- i will hopefully be getting the car in December and back to a safe home :lolcry: my plan is to do all the body work and painting myself to keep it cheap and teach myself how to do stuff seeing how we don't learn that shit as apprentices now :bash: evan g- thanks for that it will help camfromdownunder88- yeah i know but dad said some ke30 stuff can be modded easy to early stuff and i will definitely be upgrading the the suspension and brakes because i want to race it so it will need to handle and go ae824ate- na thats the thing i could go and do a eng swap and stuff like that but i want to rego it and keep it old sckool and look good, and i doubt dad would approve of me doing a engine swap to his pride and joy :hmm:, thanks thats what i needed help with and ill look into brands and stuff but that will help me off cheers trev- yeah thats what i thought the 5k had more torque but thats not what i need is it for racing ??? thats why i thought the 4k would be better and plus i have one in the shed lol :lolcry: doogs- thanks mate ill have a look at the link and then see what ill do???, yeah thats right i will be trying to do as much of the work myself so that i save some money and learn heaps myself, i will be upgrading the whole car with better handling and ride for racing !!!
