No real way of measuring it, only the tell tail signs of white muffler and hotter running motor (and maybe less power...) other then that, just old fashion trip/tank measurement..

 

of cause, i could be completely wrong about it...

 

How do you expect it to last?

 

Less power, more acceleration under lean conditions, I reckon it will go bang.

OH Ho HO! don't get me started in them "Brown-gas" crap!! do the math, it uses 20% energy to make a gas that only gives 10% energy in return.. Thermal Dynamics buddy, its not a rule, its Physics, you CAN'T break it!

 

now trev, I thought them magnets were a banned product on ebay... :blinks:

 

and yeah, I'll look into the Weber carby adapter and CPI, towe001. oh, and sorry, 1C ^..

You're wasting your time without checking the mixture, and lead-free petrol does not show colour on the plugs or exhaust...

 

Buy a mixture display meter or build the Jaycar unit and run an oxygen analyser in the exhaust manifold. Its not that you want it lean, its that you want it lean sometimes and not lean at others.

 

I'm still playing with the SU needles and it runs at 18:1 on over run, wanders up and down 14.7 to 17 at idle, and goes to 11:1 on acceleration. Those are all good figures. On the slight acceleration you need to keep the car moving it runs around 12 or 13, which to me could be leaner.

 

Much more complicated than you might first believe, but any figure under 14.7 to 1 is wasting fuel and any figure above that is lean and will burn valves under power.

ah those offical figures are always a bit unrealistic for people like us. Sounds like you could use a 7afe, they are tuned for power and torque very low revs and have no cam overlap, great for economy. Can someone who has owned a 7afe powered car verify this?

 

7AFEs are a decent engine, but I'd never recommend putting them in something when a 4AGE is just as easy to do. To get a 7A to keep up with a 4AGE requires a few mods and a judicious right foot, and once that happens any fuel consumption advantage of the FE head goes out the window - I get pretty much the same fuel economy figures in my 7A-powered AE102 that my g/f did in her bigport 4AGE AE82, both cars were within a kw of each other power-wise and were basically as fast as each other on the road (albeit with different characteristics).

 

Add to that the fact that the FE head has the dizzy hanging off the end of the head (like a 20v) and no provision for RWD-style engine mounts, and there is no reason why you'd choose one over a RWD-suitable 4AGE 16v.

How about a couple of grass eaters and plug a hose into each one, run the hoses to a tank of some description which in turn feeds a vacuum pump into a tank bit like a LPG gas tank so that the methane can be compressed before it goes into the motor.

 

Different grains to increase the fart power :lol:

fark....is this for a daily? Just go out and buy a small car that already has good fuel economy and use this car for days you want to use that 3L/km more......

 

the solar hydrogen idea isn't too bad....what do you put into it? Water...hmmm....

Already a member of hypermilling club ecomodder.com, and I apply some of them techniques, although I have no idea how to kill this old motor quicker by leaning it up, and its not to legal to tape up all the edges and creases on the car (you know, duct tape looking like its holding the doors bonnet and boot: "you need to have the doors free to escape the car")...

 

I got the seca because it was sort of "cheap (well, under $1000)," it had the reachback type hatch, so a little more streamline then the old hatch, it had a larger motor (4A over 2A), 4 speed auto (so at 80KM/h its doing 2K not 2.5-3K) and still had the old carby, so easier to lean out with (unlike EFI where you have to add a wideband sensor, alter the ECU, put smaller injectors in, etc etc..)..

 

Never thought of bunging in a O2/air sensor in and using that only with a readout, i might have a closer look into doing this..

 

And yeah jono1986, its a daily, although the space is needed half the time, (corolla, you can move a household in a day), the other half is to get from A to B and back..

 

EvenG, nice little "Volkswagen 1-litre car", I could make this seca run the same, get the old 1970 1A motor, slap a Fisher&Paykel "SmartMotor" between the engine and gearbox(or maybe 2 of them electric motors on the 2 rear wheels...), boot full of batteries, 3 phase AC controller and Bobs your uncle! Aussies (or even the World) 1st Hybrid Corolla!!

 

and No, I'm not going to run the 1A on hydrogen only, powered from the batteries... and use the 2 motors as generators.. and make myself perpetual motion car... I need elastic bands for that, thats where it gets expensive! :|
