Hey Hey,

My 3k toyoglide ke11 gets a we bit sometimes. If i put around on flat roads with about 1/4 throttle it sits at about 85 degrees with is good, But as soon as it sees a hill and i out my foot down to 3/4 the temps reaches 95 really quick. If the hill is steep like queens road at kingston it will hit 100 degrees easy and probably cook if i kept going. This is with a 10 inch thermo fan running full time.

The 3k has a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, hoses, coolant, radiator, cap and overflow bottle.

Get too hot too quick for my liking, Agree ?

Too hot to begin with, what temp gauge are you running?

Honestly sounds like the rad isn't flowing enough like there is crap in it.

I found a few ways to help with temperature.

Replace std 7psi radiator cap with a 13psi item.

Drill new holes in the number plate. Instead of it hanging from the top of the bumper, have it mounted in the middle to lift it up a bit and allow more airflow through the vent hole in the stone tray under the bumper.

My ke16 when I got it had a thermo fan and it ran hot. I ditched it and found a plastic fan that mounted on the waterpump. Made it run a lot cooler...

It is a pity that there is not enough room behind the radiator in the ke1x to put in a decent shroud for a thermo fan. Would make them run a LOT more effectively pulling through the entire radiator core, rather than pushing through just the area of the fan.

also once the car is actually moving the thermo fan will be useless, as there will be more airflow from the movement of the car than the fan.

i agreed with the others in that sounds like your just not getting enough flow through the radiator, id pull it out and give it a good flush, upside down etc.

anyone know the thermostat opening temp of a K motor thermostat? 85 sounds about right for normal operating temp, the 4age thermostat is 82 deg, so maybe 85 is a bit hot to begin with.

My old KE10 got hot even after everything was cleaned up like yours - water pump, rad, etc etc.

Ended up being 40 years of oil sludge built up in the engine and the head - engine eventually seized and a 4K fixed it good :)

What's the ignition timing set at if you check it today?

Idle and at a couple of thousand revs??

Retarded ignition runs hot, but its unlikely to be the case looking at the way you look after the car.

CAn you start it and run it without a rad cap to get some idea of the flow rate into the radiator? At the same time put a thermometer in the rad and note what temp the thermostat opens, and if the gauge agrees with the thermometer.

It might be that the system was marginal when designed and rust & scale buildup over the years have lowered the efficiency that crucial amount. Its odd that a new pump and radiator haven't sorted it.

Ours improved when I stripped the engine and along the way cleaned out all the rust inside the block.

on a 3k is there an engine flush plug?

On my 4k there's a flush plug somewhere under the thermostat housing toward the lower part of the engine, on the front. it's a tapered brass bolt.

flush from the thermostat housing opening out through that, back the other way, from the flush plug hole and out the bottom hose etc etc. basically all combinations you can think of with a strong hose

I did this for a long long time on my 4k before it started running clear. water should pour out very quickly if the jackets arent clogged.

I think theres product you can use to un stick bits of old sediment and sludge when flushing out the block's water jackets.

if you've done all that and replaced the radiator, pump, thermostat etc etc etc then the problem might not be the cooling systems fault but something engine related

std 4k thermo stat opens at 88 and hovers around 72-80 when open.

mr altezza - my temp was hovering around 90's when 1500rpm idle and 20 degree advance

did you bleed the coolant properly?
