Sounds like you may not have got the cam timing right. Lift the tappett cover off and ensure that both inlet and exhaust valves are closed when the top dead centre timing mark is aligned. Also worth checking that the dizzy was put back in correctly. Cheers.

Dizzy is most likely a tooth or two out. You can rotate the oil pump drive with a flathead screwdriver so you can line up a different tooth on the cam

Cam timing

When number 1 is firing at TDC.

Number 4 will be rocking, inlet will just be starting to open and exhaust will just about be closed.

Check balancer marking is correct as well could be out or has been remarked for some reason.

If thats ok set balancer to 5` btdc and dissy should be pointing toward number 1 plug lead and points should be starting to open.

if thats OK check spark.

If thats OK check fuel. could be no fuel or flooding.

Is carby solidoid OK ?

Sounds like dizzy. If not, it might be cam timing, although I'd expect it to run badly a tooth out.

If its not the distributor, can you check the cam timing against the manufacturer's notes. They should tell you when the valves open and close, and you might have to put a protractor on the crank pulley. You're only looking for a handful of degrees here if its a tooth out.

I was also thinking maybe the valves are not closing for some reason too.

Hydro or solid lifters Phil?

If solid what did you set the valves clearances to?

Hey guys, since being on the topic of interest for me and so that I don't have to start a new topic, I'd like to ask a few questions.

So I have a 5K sitting on an engine stand at home and was thinking about getting a cam grind for it.

I would be after something that is comfortably streetable yet still have that aggressive sound, verging on sounding like a rotary.

Could anyone recommend a gring for a 5k?

Now if it was a 4k I would not even have bothered posting here as they are simple to do and plenty of info floating about. I am just unsure about the hydro part of the 5k.

When I take to camshaft out from the 5k are the hydro lifters going to drop? do they need adjusting after??

I think I would be going with Crow Cams as they were the only ones to respond to my e-mails last time and were very helpful.

Cheers guys!
