Hi All,

This is my first post here because i have not owned a corolla for about 15 years... and now i do.

I have owned 4/5 ke20 corollas in my teens, my first one given to me by my brother @ 12 years old! thanks bro!

(I only crashed one of them.. the rest were destroyed by siblings/friends, and I will NEVER forgive them! )

My project:

A slightly rusty (not too bad) unfinished and unstarted project car bought for next to nothing.

The guy I bought it off got it as an unfinished project years ago, and never started finishing it.

I hope to do a bit better ;)

First off I must say this will be a total budget build using as much cheap/free stuff as I can find (I know people who wreck cars for scrap metal)so please don't give me stick for using 2nd hand stuff like clutches etc. Or feel free to donate something better ;)

The car came with a 5k in unknown condition (which I hope to pull apart and refresh) and a 4 speed box (which i think is stuffed), neither of which is in the car.

Also a half finished front brake upgrade of unknown origins (there are no calipers, but there is a booster of some description cable tied into the engine bay)

It is currently stored elsewhere while i slowly gather parts and information and room to work on it.

I just picked up a w50 gearbox from an RA40 celica. Which is where my first question comes in.. :)

Well more a clarification..

After reading the gearbox tech file on here, it appears that i need the bellhousing, clutch and flywheel from a k powered liteace? and with minor mods to the bell housing it should bolt in with the yoke off the ra40 and a holden uni?

Is that right?

and which old holden uni?

Is there anything else i should get off the celica before it's crushed?

As for the turbo i scored a suck thru su carb and t3 garrett setup off a 1.5 litre laser in good cond. for 100 bucks (which i got in trouble for buying :( )!, which I am hoping to shoehorn onto the 5k somehow.

As for funds for the project, I have a very pretty and loving handbrake who usually knows better and stops me from blowing money I can't afford.. so basically I can't spend anything till further notice. I am in no rush with this project and hope to do the majority, if not all the work myself in my shed (when i can make room)

I will post photo's etc as i go

The KE20 was my first ever car and I have always wanted to build a streetable, fun weekend car that might see a little track time in the odd classic race.

It wont be perfect or awesome, but i will do my best!

And "ONLY I WILL DRIVE THIS ONE!"

Hey mate,

I wrote the FAQ on the K-W50 setup. I got the GB ready with the bellhousing and fork fitted, then took the KE55 and RA40 tailshafts to a mechanic mate to get the end on. He was the one who said "you can use an old holden uni for this". I never investigated it much further as I then bought a K-T50 setup and the K-W will soon be used for another project. I would be connecting the W yoke to a suzuki jack-shaft so whatever info I come up with for that won't be much use to you.

As for the turbo setup, you should be able to knock somethig up pretty cheap, espeacially being suck-through. I got my original blow-through setup running for around $400 with a few donations from mates. Suck-through doesn't require the same fuel setup as blow-though, its pretty much just a normal carby setup as long as you have adequate volume.

The cheapest way to get the exhaust gas flowing through the turbo is with a "j-pipe". Click on "tar" in my signature below and you can find some pics of j-pipes.

Cheers,

Si.

Cheers, I am fairly confident I can get the turbo working ok (having done my first on a 4.2l diesel about a month ago, I'm hooked!) A J pipe is what I was thinking already. As for fuel, the whole setup was running well on the 1.5 laser, so I assume I should only need to play with fuel pressures, and a little tweaking with mixtures. I guess I will have to do a little playing around with the tailshaft.. ke20 would be different to the ke55 anyway? Shouldn't be too difficult I hope.

Was I right in assuming everything from the liteace bolts up and works?

sweet! thanks. Got everyone on the lookout for one :)

Ok so I am wanting to change the stud pattern to the more common 4x114.3, and do a front disc conversion. There are so many different ways to do it, I can't get my head around it all.. I want to keep it simple and cheap, so it's as near to free as possible.

I have access to an RA40 celica, and a ke55 corolla, which i can take whatever i want off of for 50 cents a kilo.. Is there anything on these two cars I should be ripping out for brake upgrade? or anything else useful?

EDIT: done another hour of google etc, it seems i should grab the discs and calipers and backing plates off the ke55, and maybe the complete rear axles out of one or both.. I believe the ra40 is stronger and the same width as the ke55 @ 1410mm?

ra40 is coil, and the 55 is leaf.. will the 55 bolt in, or will i need to move spring mounts?

I'm leaning towards the ra40 diff for thrashability.. any suggestions?

quick update.. no i'm not dead ;) just busy.

stupid floods!

I got a good running 5k with the alternator, starter, fan, etc, still bolted to the 5 speed gearbox from mate for 70 bucks

unforunately no room in shed yet.. still no house.. so its stored elsewhere.

Also found one of my old rally cars, the one my brother rolled, it has a datsun engine in it :bash: unfinished conversion :rolls:

I get that for the princely sum of 1x 6pack :) old mate from school had it. probably throwing an engine and box into it to make a dirt thrasher or re-shell it

Update.. Finally started, pics coming.

Found another 20, I now have:

2 x other peoples "unfinished project ke20, partly dismantled and some repairs started, almost complete.."

building one car out of the two..

Finally started, pics coming..

Yesterday took to all the bubbles with an angle grinder wire brush..

Decided it was fixable-able.. (with my half hours worth of google knowledge) :hmm:

Never cut rust out before, decided the boot was history and used it for patch panels, first attempt was good, not that hard, and nothing that bog wont make pretty.. I wish i could weld

Planning to paint it red and black. All the ex grey (now faded brown) grill, corner finishers, tailight surrounds etc I am painting satin black with red trims. The body monza red, with chrome bumpers if savageable.. otherwise.. black. Pin stripes and (what are those door protector rubber chrome pinstripy things?) will be coming off and body mostly debadged. Would love to see some te27 flares and fender mirrors on there at some stage.
